Default PS3 has Officially Outsold Xbox360 in Europe!

clicky

Quote:
SCEE boss David Reeves has told the audience at the PlayStation Day conference that Sony is beating Microsoft in the console battle - in Europe, at least.

"I am delighted to be able announce today that we have sold more PlayStation 3s throughout Europe than Xbox 360 - even though they launched sixteen months before PS3," he said.

More than 5 million PS3 consoles have now been shifted in Europe, according to Reeves. "We are particularly proud of this as it has been achieved in a similar time frame as PlayStation 2 which retailed, if you remember, at a significantly lower price," he said.

Referring to Xbox 360, Reeves said Sony's machine has been outselling its closest competitor since October 2007, despite the latest price cut. He offered no comment on sales of the Wii.

Reeves also said 12 million PSP handhelds and 48 million PS2s have been sold in Europe. He added, "These numbers are a testament to the strength of the PlayStation brand throughout our region, the ever-increasing number of titles being launched, the rich content on offer and its appeal to different demographics and cultures."

Other stats revealed at the event included the fact that 3.2 million gamers have now registered on PlayStation Network, and more than 57 million items of content have been downloaded from the PlayStation Store.

Sales of EyeToy games have now reached 6.7 million, while for Buzz! the figure is 6 million and for SingStar it's 12 million. On average, each SingStar PS3 owner has paid for and downloaded six additional songs.

Reeves said new global hardware sales figures will be revealed in Tokyo next week. He reiterated that by the end of 2007 more than 10.5 million PS3s, 34 million PSPs and 127 million PS2s had been sold around the world.

So what's helped PS3 reach the 5 million mark in Europe? It's all about "the quality of the software", reckons Reeves. "And now with exclusive titles such as Haze, LBP, Resistance, MotorStorm, customers are buying into PS3 as the ultimate gaming system."

Nice info. The PS3 has been outselling the XBox 360 in the USA for the last few weeks on a consistent basis. www.gamechartz.com

Great news! We should really start seeing the PS3 being used as the lead platform now for more games.

The PS3 now becomes the front runner in Europe, soon the US. Yes, everything is coming to order just as prophesied. Soon the Zigerates will take over the world (insert evil laugh here).

I await the scores after July, when Metal Gear makes its impact.

A few months earlier than I was expecting, I'd be interested to see how GT5:P affected hardware sales across the whole of Europe.

MS are surprisingly quiet at the moment. I guess they have their spin doctors putting a press release together to explain why a 16 month head start and a console that has always been cheaper than the PS3 hasn't sewn up a winning lead in sales for the 360 in Europe.

It was only recently MS announced that Europe was the battle ground that had to be won!! Oh dear.

Hardly any presence in Japan, they've lost Europe, so just America to go!

On top of that they spent as much money pushing the 360 version of GTA4 as they did Halo 3 and some figures suggest that sales of the game are split at around 55:45, hardly the commanding sales lead they wanted!

360 still has a significant lead in Australia/New Zealand as well, although it's been narrowing.

2 Major makets down, 1 to go. 360 might as well not even exist in Japan...

Good news for the ps3. Curiously silent about ps3 game sales in Europe.

Doing alright in US, though needs a huge boost if it wants to catch the 360 let alone the ps2. Japan is a fiasco that may not be salvageable at this point.

I dont know what you guys are so happy about. Playstation 3 has some serious catching up to do.

More than 10.5 million PlayStation 3s were sold worldwide by the end of 2007. To date, in Europe more than five million PS3s have been sold.

Nintendo had shipped more than 25 million Wiis worldwide by April this year, while Microsoft reported 19 million 360s shipped by the same period.

I think you will see them slowely crawl to the top but in the end they will be the more dominant.

And funnily enough, it's already caught up 16 months headstart of 360 sales in Europe. That's costing more than the 360 which is selling less than the PS3 now despite dropping the HDD-less SKU to sub-Wii price.

North America is the only region where PS3 isn't catching up quickly but apparently those AAA exclusive games haven't released yet.

I have a lot of 360 owning friends, but they only bought it because they can crack it and play games for free. They don't give jack shit about HD graphics or online or wireless internet. And for that the 360 is good for them.

Psst.... you're not smart.

360 had a big headstart but PS3 is outselling it now worldwide... even here. Catching Wii isn't really a reasonable goal consdiering the price difference now is it? Also considering the Wii has never been anywhere close to "next gen". Wii is this gen's "cheap" system. Ford Escorts sell more than Ferraris... doesn't make them better, it just means they're cheap.
