Default New Simpsons DVD packaging?

Years ago I bought the first two seasons of The Simpsons on DVD. They have the slide-out digipack case style where you kind of unfold it (I think that's the term, anyway).

A couple of days ago, I bought the third season at a local video store, brand new. To my dismay, the packaging is... different. Here are some pics.

I actually couldn't believe this was how you were supposed to open it, and I spent a couple minutes looking for a different way. I really hate this, because that cardboard flap will definitely get bent/creased if I'm doing this every time I want to switch a disc.

And on the inside, there's... this. It's just ugly, although I suppose it's functional enough.

I don't even see why they would change it... I guess it's more plastic, less cardboard.

I see on the bottom there's a 2011 date. Have more seasons been redone in this way? Is it likely that season 4 and onward are also like this?

Yup that's new packaging. Up Season 10, original packaging, was very good. The packaging has sucked since Season 11 and onward. The disc get scratched before you even open up the packaging. This has been my main gripe since Season 11. If you can find older Season sets prior 2011 Date, recommend doing that. That packing sucks but it is better than S11 and on.

Well, that sucks. Now either this one will be the odd one out or everything from season 4 and onward will have the new packaging (until season 11 or whatever).

It's way better than the season 11 packaging. I couldn't believe how crappy that was when I got it home and opened it up. I still haven't bought season 12 because the packaging, and fortunately they've done blu-rays for season 13 on.

Yup... packaging S11 and onward is just awful. I still buy the seasons on DVD. I'm fine with that... Is the bluray packaging the same as the DVD all crappy?

So is this repackaging of Season 3 similar to Season 11's packaging? I had thought s11 had the "book" style packaging (which would explain easily scratched discs).

Much like the OP I bought some of the Simpsons boxsets early on and now I'm thinking about collecting a few more of the seasons. I have the first three so might get up to 8 or 9. I have a question though and maybe the OP could answer it: when the first season was released on DVD it came in a slipcase box set that had this weird kind of rainbow coloured effect laid over the silver. Does anyone remember this and if so what exactly this effect is called? I'm trying to buy this original box set online but am not quite sure what it is I'm looking for ie. I don't know how to describe it to sellers when I contact them asking if it's the case I'm looking for.

The blu-ray versions of season 13-16 and 20 are just regular blu-ray cases with a slipcase - much, much better than the terrible DVD packaging for those seasons (the accordion style cases).

I have an old S1 which was bought reasonably close to the original release date, IIRC, but I'm not seeing a rainbow effect. Mine is just shiny grey with no other colours, and looks slightly pearly instead of the much more metallic texture of the box on my repackaged S2. However, it's quite possible I don't have one of the very first pressings, if they were limited that way.

Anyway, from the way you describe it, it sounds like what I'd call an iridescent overlay.

I just googled that and yeah it's got that kind of effect that you see in some of the pottery google images. If you saw the first blu-ray boxset of Back tk the Future a similar effect is seen on that set's digipack.

That's the same style that Seasons 6-10 use. Seasons 1-5 originally used the fold out style. Apparently they've rereleased seasons 1-5 to match the other ones. I wish Fox would rerelease all the seasons in standard cases (like they've done with all their other shows).

Sorry for the late reply, but I just noticed there's an inconsistency with the replies here. Was it 6-10 that used this packaging, or just 11 and onward? (Or seasons 1-5, 6-10, AND 11+ all had different style packaging?)

11 and onward have the worst freaking packaging ever. It actively made me stop buying the seasons.

I'm glad this thread exists. I was buying rereleases of the earlier seasons of King of the Hill and I like that they're now in slimmer packages. I wondered if earlier seasons of the Simpsons were doing this too, but am disappointed to learn that they're actually worse than the initial releases. I hope they consider releasing them in single DVD cases like KotH.

I had no idea they changed the packaging until today.

I just picked up a new copy of Season 5 since my discs are pretty worn out and was amazed that this packaging nearly matches 6-9. I love it because the fold out packaging is awful as my discs are constantly falling out of their trays unless I tape them in there (especially on my Season 3 set and two discs from my old Season 5 set). I think I might upgrade Seasons 1-4 too since it doesn't seem like we are ever getting these on BD.

Oh, and I have no idea if they do this with the first four seasons, but it came with a fold out poster of the original artwork that was from the old set. That is awesome and makes for a great poster.

I wish there was actually some insight on this at all. I tried searching for it on google last night and this post was the first thing that showed up and seems to be the only thing that even mentions it. I can't even find anyone on Youtube that talks about it.

Yeah I don't like those reissued packages for seasons 1-5, part of the fun of those DVD sets is lining up the discs with the package.

If they're going to change the packaging, they should just go ahead and put them in regular-sized DVD cases (like how Futurama eventually downsized).

And, God, I can't stand the accordion style used from season 11-on. I was thrilled they started doing Blu-ray with season 13. Buuuut of course it looks like they're going back to just DVD for season 18.
