Default share your suggestions/question

When I get in the mood to get into some new anime I usually hop on here and ask for suggestions. But one of the last times I did that a member here posted a link.that was the anime equivalent of last FM. As in you enter a title you like and it suggests similar titles. It was a great resource but I seem to have lost the link. Anyone got any idea what web site it was?

In the meantime some helpful suggestions of series or preferably movies to check out would be appreciated. Does not have to be blu available

Top favs if it helps narrow your suggestions.

Garden of sinners
Ninja scroll
Akira
Ghost in the shell
GitS Stand alone complex
Princess mononoke
Spirited away
Elfen lied
Advent children
Darker than black
Hellsing (both versions)
Serial experiments Lain.
Ergo proxy

Edit : while i really enjoy dark scifi style anime I really like Miyazaki/ghibli. I also enjoyed nausicca, howls, and Laputa. But I didn't like ponyo which was much to childish for my tastes which has me weary of the rest of the catalogue any thoughts on ones worth my time please give me a heads up

On my list.. started watching one before but wasn't feeling it. Really need to give it another shot cause I know that's always highly recommended.

The only other Ghibli that is a bit on the juvenile side is My Neighbor Totoro, but not nearly as much as Ponyo and still a very good story. If you want something with a bit more appeal to adults, I would suggest Princess Mononoke and Porco Rosso... and perhaps a few of the slice-of-life Ghiblis, From up on Poppy Hill, Whisper of the Heart, Only Yesterday, and even Ocean Waves. And then there's always Grave of the Fireflies...

EDIT: Ah I see you did mention you saw Mononoke... missed that.

Dark sci-fi, try Ergo Proxy. I would also recommend trying Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood and Gurren Lagann to start...

Apocalypse Zero
Queen's Blade
All the 4 seasons of Ikki Tousen
School Days

Done. /end thread

[Show spoiler]Just kidding, it's very easy to troll people on suggestion threads. I can't even control it anymore.

The actual recommendations would be this ones:

The Monogatari series (Unless you can't handle excessive talking, insanely fast editing and toothbrushes used for sexual innuendo)
Another
Kite (The cut version of it)
The ef series
Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni and No Naku Koro Ni Kai
Shiki
Steins;Gate
Eden Of The East
Ghost In The Shell series
Wolf Children
Fate/Zero
Madoka Magic
Jin Roh
Maoyuu Maou Yuusha
OreImo
Anything made by Satoshi Kon
Neon Genesis Evangelion up until episode 25 and The End Of Evangelion and the Rebuilds

I've just seen the first three episodes though... not sure what to think about it yet. Also, what's up with the lack of a Blu-Ray release?

You want dark science-fiction? Go with Ergo Proxy (it's a top 5 favorite of mine all time) but then.....

Tehxnolyze (be prepared to get depressed after watching this)
Gilgamesh
and lastly Elfen Lied

that should take care of your needs for a short time.... let us know if you're thirsty for more after that....

Keep watching, then. I got so wrapped up in that series as it went along... I don't know if we'll ever see a Blu-ray for that or not - I hope so, I'd double-dip that one.

He did list Elfin Lied for titles he's seen already... as for anime movies, King of Thorn is another bizarre-ending scifi like Akira and Lain... and I liked Vexille and Dead Space Downfall too, they're dark - and real cheap on Blu....

Ergo proxy... how could I forget that one... I wasn't gonna list everything I've seen but that one should have gone on my top list. I really like that one.

Evangelion
Eden of the east

Both on my next short list

Gonna do some checking on that list from killerJuan as well. Never heard of a few of those and last time I dug into a list like that I ended up with garden of sinners an absolute favorite for me now.

See a few others I recognize and havn't got around to checking out... thanks all.

Any clue on the recommendation site from anyone?

My favorite is Fist Of The North Star (DVD).
I just ordered a used Blu-ray of Kurokami Vol. 1 from Amazon. That is a blind buy.

The Mardock Scramble series of films.

With an emphasis on the dark...

Also, your list includes Ghost in the Shell, I'm assuming that encompasses the Stand Alone Complex series?

Just read up on titan... looks to be exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks... going on my list.

I actually managed to find the site.. it was myanimelist.com ... I'm sure just like last FM recommendations are sometimes way off but it might come in handy now that I caught the anime bug again.

Not on Amazon but Rightstuf is having a 40% off Funimation sale and 40% Nozomi sale.

Here's a couple goodies:
Princess Jellyfish LE $19 (with GotAnime discount)
Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero LE $37.50
OniAi LE $27
Robotics Notes LE $37.50

I'm probably gonna buy OniAi and Robotic's Notes sometime today from there. Also might pickup Ninja Nonsense DVD thinpak soon for $27 since it has a timer of 49 left and there is a Nozomi sale. I REALLY like those Nozomi thinpaks.

On Amazon you can buy
Kino's Journey Thinpak Dvd for around $18 shipped
Boogiepop Phantom Thinpak Dvd for around $20 shipped

I bought used copies of these recently used from AMZ, just checked and there are still copies.

I rented out Kino's Journey years ago when I first saw it. One thing to note about the Kino's Journey discs: They used a dual-layer disc on the first volume and single-layer for the other three.

I've heard there are no good DVD releases of Boogiepop Phantom.
The files I have are encoded from a region 3 disc, and the audio was direct copied as it was only 192kbps on the disc.

Ah, that's good to know Seafox. Those were mostly blind buys, I just thought the plots were interesting and the style seems cool and they were cheap (the only DVD's I'm allowing myself to buy are thinpaks and limited editions). I will have to pay attention to the A/V quality when finally watching them and make sure they are at least enjoyable. I tend not to mind too much though as long as there aren't billions of artifacts and no strobe light effects or anything that's going to damage my health lol
