While I enjoy the LOTR films, I don't think any of them will make my top 20 of the 2000's, so I don't care if they are lumped together or not

You should be locked in a dark, dark box.

Actually, my bartender friend would probably assault you for that comment. OTOH, she also has made a very detailed -- VERY! -- diorama of the Shire, so ... Heh.

Ok, I'll probably agonize over this for the remaining week left on this poll, but I've got to put it up sometime so here it is:

1. Being John Malkovich (1999) - 20 pts.
2. Twin Peaks Pilot (1990) - 19 pts.
3. The Big Lebowski (1998) - 18 pts.
4. Maboroshi no Hikari (1995) - 17 pts.
5. Bottle Rocket (1996) - 16 pts.
6. Deconstructing Harry (1997) - 15 pts.
7. The Double Life of Veronique (1991) - 14 pts.
8. To Live (1994) - 13 pts.
9. Wild at Heart (1990) - 12 pts.
10. Blue (1993) - 11 pts.
11. Fast, Cheap & Out of Control (1997) - 10 pts.
12. Happiness (1998) - 9 pts.
13. Lost Highway (1997) - 8 pts.
14. Baraka (1992) - 7 pts.
15. Chasing Amy (1997) - 6 pts.
16. Rushmore (1998) - 5 pts.
17. American Movie (1999) - 4 pts.
18. The Lovers on the Bridge (1991) - 3 pts.
19. The Road Home (1999) - 2 pts.
20. After Life (1998) - 1 pt.

If the Twin Peaks pilot isn't allowable for some reason (I'm really thinking of the extended European theatrical cut with the red room scene at the end), please let me know because I have a ton of films that would love to squeeze on here somehow. Lynch wins the 90s for me with Kieslowski, Wes Anderson, Zhang Yimou, and Kore-eda all chasing his heels with two entries a piece. Somehow Almodovar gets squeezed out again and has to wait until the next decade along with Haneke, Tarr, and Von Trier.

My second favorite Von Trier work, but it really got a cinematic release? I see on the wiki page apparently it was cut into a five hour movie for the US and the UK, but the way I saw it was in episodic form when I taped it off of The Independent Film Channel back in the 90s.

If it's allowable, I might have to bump something off. Curse you, Von Trier! "Danish scum!"

If it's not permissible, just sue me, but it's the best thing Von Trier has ever made. I don't know about the US, both seasons of Riget got a cinematic release in the UK where I saw them, which is good enough for me.

I remember the German TV series Heimat and Berlin Alexanderplatz ending up on many film critics "best of" lists, because they were premiered at major film festivals and got a theatrical release.

I'm not trying to be difficult, but I'm just trying to avoid the slippery slope wherein Breaking Bad wins "top film of the 2010s" because that will be the day when I finally have to retire from society altogether, I think. Though hopefully six more years will give people time to put things in perspective.

Hard list. I only feel really confident about the top ten. After that, I just resorted to listing films I really enjoy watching.

Honestly that's the only way it should be approached. It's just a question of figuring out how to organize all the different types of enjoyment one can get from a selection of films. The Road Home is pretty much a giant heap of sentimentality that's perhaps not as "good" of a film as Raise the Red Lantern, but I went with the former because I'll be damned if it doesn't get to me every time.

I have to agree - FOTR would be my favorite, and that probably wouldn't even crack the top 45. My gut says it makes sense for them to be separate for the reasons mjbethancourt mentioned, but, again, leave it to the fans I say.

I agree with all the above. Most certainly HP should be split up (speaking as a big fan), I don't think anyone would want that to be together. Millennium is probably the trickiest, but I would say seperate is best, especially in that many, many people think they got significantly worse as they went on.

I'd give it a 7, I liked it but yeah wouldn't make my list, either.
