Anyone that can advise would be greatly appreciated. I was using an HDDVD player Toshiba AC3 model 1080i on a BenQ PE8700 projector that runs 1080i natively. The picture was flawless, I loved it.
I have now moved to Blu-Ray, running Sony's BDP-S301 player and after some tweaking to the configuration settings on the player, the picture quality is close, but now I am seeing jagged edges on lettering (screen credits etc.) and table tops or other square images in the picture. I know my projector is older, but again, running the native 1080i machine i could not have been more pleased with the picture. Shouldn't the sony player downscale to 1080i to fix this issue? Is there a setting I am not aware of? Anyone else out there seen this issue? Thanks |

I have the s301 and use an LCD screen.
There are no issues around Text for me if that is a reference point for you. I don't think it is the player and it most certainly is not the format. Good luck, happy tweaking and welcome to the family. |

first thing is your PJ does not run 1080i natively, it converts it to 720p. (the benq PE8700 is a 1280x720p native DMD).
now if you were sending it 1080i the PJ needs to convert the signal inside the PJ by scaling and deinterlacing. Some Displays take 1080i and convert it to 540p and then upscale 540p to 720p, this is nasty as more resolution is lost and quite a few TVs do it this way, projectors for the most part tend to do it better but not always and again dvd players can be quilty of this sin. Its sounds by your discription that your PJ was doing a good job and it may do a better job than the sony player so make sure the sony BD player is also outputting 1080i. If the sony player is outputting 720p, then your PJ will not be doing any conversion work, the sony has taken care of that. (also if you output 720p from the dvd player make sure overscan is turned off at the PJ end so you get a 1:1 pixel map, if not you introduce more scaling and degrade the image) See which looks better. I'm not much of an expert but In a nutshell your picture should look as good as if not better than before.
Just to reiterate what Gandley wrote: 1st, try your player's internal scaler: 1. Be sure your player is set to output 720p (your projector's native resolution) and that it knows your monitor is 16:9. I don't know that player but if it's like my Samsung you should set the HDMI format to Monitor. 2. I don't know your projector either but you may need to tell it to run in 720p native mode. I had an older model Benq once and if the pe8700 is like that model you may need to tell it to run 16:9 as well. See how that looks. 2nd, try the projector's internal scaler by basically telling the player to send 1080i and the projector to run 1080i. See which you thought looked best. With my system - which uses a 720p native projector - I output 720p from all my sources. I've done the 1080i thing but don't see a difference and I feel there's less scaling going on if I just "go native" and it 'should' look better. Did you change input types when you switched from HD-DVD to Blu? It may be something in the input settings that was missed. If you're going through a receiver there may be a chance something's happening there too. PS: When your projector's telling you that it runs 1080i it just means it accepts 1080i signals but it converts it to it's native 720p. Good Luck! ![]() |

you've got to be kidding me with this thread lmao. I just started watching hd-dvds as I won some on ebay(like 9 for $21) and the audio and PQ is about as good as showtime or hbo. yuck!
The audio is hourendous I have to turn it up to like 29-35 to hear anything a where as my blu-ray players all are around 9-17 and sound loud as can be. The PQ is sht only a TINY TINY bit better than tv, the Bourne series looks terrible I actually wish I could have my 2.41 back I paid for it, Mummy Returns looks bad Sounds even worse... I dont know how hd-dvd managed to stay in the game as long as they did with such a terrible product. if anything this should be an improvement times 10 try movies like POTC, spider-man, 007, black hawk down, exc. exc. |

The BDP-S301 was configured for 480P, for some reason, the first movie I watched did not drop me into the easy setup function. Once I found that option, thanks to the comments above, the picture is once again GORGEOUS
![]() Thanks for the input |

To the OP, there might be some tweaking you need to do (like take it out of 480p to 1080i/720p). Neither format looks bad. I have both. You are correct to send 1080i out of the Toshiba. They don't do 720p so well. |

you would be surprised how many people think HiDef is all hype simply because they either didnt set things up properly or have seen a display just plug and played. you know this has happened when people claim they dont see any difference. |

I guessed i got mixed up as I could have sworn that you were the one buying HD-DVD movies and not me. Trying to lump me in as an HD-DVD troll is simply lame and really tired. The war is over whether you want it to be or not...
