United Kingdom Lift to the Scaffold (Louis Malle)

Lift to the Scaffold Blu-ray

NEWS/TRAILER
https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=13198

Quote:
British distributors Artificial Eye will release on Blu-ray Louis Malle's noir masterpiece classic film Elevator to the Gallows a.k.a Lift to the Scaffold (1958), starring Jeanne Moreau, Maurice Ronet, Georges Poujouly, Yori Bertin, and Jean Wall. The release will be available for purchase on April 28th.

A black comedy/thriller where a crime of passion goes horribly wrong as the killer gets trapped in a lift. His lover, Jeanne Moreau, the victim's wife, is out searching for him in Paris. Meanwhile a young hood and his girl steal the killer's car and he unwittingly gets involved in another crime. This was Louis Malle's first film as director and it partly set the tone for the 'new wave' to come. Notable for its famous jazz score, improvised in one night by Miles Davis while the film was being projected. (Distributed in the United Kingdom as Lift to the Scaffold).

The recently restored classic film is now also back in UK cinemas, courtesy of BFI.

Note: In the United States, Elevator to the Gallows is currently available on DVD, courtesy of The Criterion Collection.
ALSO AVAILABLE IN BLU-RAY AUDIO

Malle made many more masterpieces later in his career, but he could always say "Yeah, Miles Davis scored my directorial debut." Love this movie.

Anyone know if the January 12th release is still on? It's been fraught with delays.

Yeah, seems this and Au Hasard Balthazar are gonna continue to be carrots dangled in front of us. Wouldn't be surprised if this supposed Tarkovsky set joins them!

That's just amazon keeping the preorder live as a placeholder rather than anything to do with AE.

Hope you didn't get the French one. Blu ray.com gives it a poor review. I am dying to see Criterion release this with a new 4K scan. The French disc is from a new 2K scan but something went wrong with the encode.

I see that a Louis Malle Collection is coming "soon." But no Atlantic City.

Maybe Criterion one day?

Having bought the box set last week, I'm feeling rather conflicted about it.

The films look and sound lovely, and the packaging and book are first class.

What really bothers me is the complete lack of any extras whatsoever. It's not as though no extras exist, so I really don't understand the omission. Not even trailers! Box sets such as this often attract collectors and higher prices - to offer a barebones release in this day and age is unforgivable. I'm going to be MUCH more careful of Artificial Eye sets in future...

What was the original aspect ratio of the film? Why did they release it in academy ratio on the blu ray while Criterion was 1:66:1? Thanks

This is always a can of worms. Most sources of contemporary reference give the film's AR as 1: 1.66, so the new release being in 1.37 would tend to suggest that the film was shot open matte, and that masking at individual cinema level produced the effect of 1.66. Somewhere on here you'll find acres of type concerning Criterion's On The Waterfront - which reproduces the film in THREE different formats - and Kino's Marty, both of which present their respective films in 1.37, the negatives having been exposed open matte, but effectively cropped (often of empty dead space) for exhibition. Thorny, thorny, thorny....
