Default Hypothetical question PS3 or High End.

I'm going to put this in the right catagory this time !!!!

If you had a true high-end system:

Speaker price range: Mains $15,000 and up
Center 7,500 and up
Rear: 15,000 and up
Sub (x2): 7,000 and up (each)

Amp price range: 7 mono block amps: $4,000 each

Processor range: Prepro $8,000

Equalization: Audyssey $2,500

Projector/monitor $15,000 and up

With a system like this, you have the money, and you're not a gamer, this player would be your main source in the above system. Would you opt for a PS3 or a highend unit - If money was no object (No you can't have both in the system).
Wish I had this type of cash

If one were to spend all that money on processors, although there is nothing wrong with the PS3 in that setup, I think you'd get far better tonal control/flexibility if you bitstreamed out.... Therefore I'd go BD50...

I agree. I would probrably go with a Denon 3800, Pioneer Elite, or better unit - seeing that if I had that type of cash - the BD50 would pale in that system.

Well in that case, I"d go with an as yet unfinalized Marantz BD player.

LOL... If money was really no object, then I would MOST DEFINITELY go with BOTH!!! I'd have a bitstreaming standalone for BD and a PS3 for gaming/multimedia/internet. You can't bring "money is no object" into a hypothetical situation like this and then say that "you can't have both in the system." That's like going to the supermarket and having an employee tell you that you are allowed to purchase anything in the store except an orange.

Why eliminate the only barrier to a scenario and then throw a limitation in at the last minute? Involving limitations ruins the hypothetical nature of everything you said in setting up the details of the post.

Note - the question is if your were not a gamer - this is to bring the discussion to bluray player vs bluray player, but if you did have both - I believe you would view more movies on the High-end standalone anyway !

You answered my question right there! For BD playback ( not internet, multimedia or gaming - money no object - I would regulate those task to a real computer), you would choose a standalone..

I would buy both as well, why not. Why not have one in the living room and one in the theater room.

I would go with the PS3, even if I wasn't a gamer, the ability to download the 1080p trailers from the Sony Store and store them for later viewings would also be cool for showing off a setup like that.

The PS3 is a good little player, i have one, but we did a comparison against the Denon 2500 and the Denon was a clear winner using both a projector and a good quality panel.

I will have the PS3 and another stand alone blu-ray player for bitstreaming audio. It could be hard for any other stand alone player to match PS3 blu-ray PQ but some people consider the inability of PS3 to bitstream lossless codecs as a limitation.

Ok - if you were having friends over to watch the greatest BD movie ever with the best sound, using the system mentioned in the original post - which player would you choose to show it to your friends on? The PS3 or a High-End standalone (Denon 2500 or better)?

My first priority is the PQ over and above AQ. This doesn't mean that I do not care about AQ. It is important as well. However, PQ is more important to me. I am not sure about the PQ of Denon 2500. I know PS3 blu-ray PQ is topnotch. It will be hard to beat that. If PS3 PQ is better than Denon, then I would use PS3 for the demo. In addition, I will show the difference and recommend them to go for the player with the best PQ.

Definite high end stand alone. Denon 3800 or wait for new Elite ( not one this summer but high end one this winter ) or Marantz. I am just like you, conrad johnson, Oracle, Wireworld . PS3 is great but would never play games. Definite high end stand alone. Why own a Mustang GT when you can have a Lotis. Both get from point A to B and a lot of fun but you are a lot more proud driving the Lotis.

Already tested - by one of the members here if I'm not mistaken (musicman1999)- Denon kills it in PQ.
