Default Help me save my PS3 before I take it to MS

Hey every one,

My PS3 does not read games or Blu Ray movies. Blu Ray movies do not work at all. I will hear the disc spinning really fast for like 30 seconds and then nothing. Games are VERY (and I mean VERY) hit and miss.

For the most part games will not work at all, I insert the game and nothing loads up. But very rare occasions, when I start my PS3 I notice that the PS3 has recognized the game.

When I go ahead and select the game it either freezes on the starting credits or some times loads up, lets me play a couple matches and then the game/system freezes up. I restart my PS3 and the game no longer pops up on the XMB.

So what gives? The laser isn't dead right? Other wise the games would never load. Is the laser dying? Does it just need to be cleaned?

I'm thinking of taking advantage of Microsoft's promotion and trading it in for $100 towards a XBONE. I would much rather salvage my PS3 if possible. Im thinking of trying a laser cleaner disc + compressed air bottle to see if that does the trick. Maybe taking it in to a local shop I found on CL. Any one here have a similar problem?

I think you may have updated to firmware 4.55 recently correct? If you read other forums you'll find hundreds of people with similar problems. I myself thought the samething and replaced my 60gb fat for the new super slim system. Now brand new disc's are freezing and skipping after the 4.55 update. I think Sony has a problem but they haven't admitted it yet.

I still have my 60GB PS3, but haven't updated the firmware in a long while. I don't think I will though to prevent any serious problems! I only use my slim PS3 anyways since I don't want to risk that awesome 60GB console dying a third time.
