USA Broadway Danny Rose (1984) - April 8, 2014 - Limited to 3,000 copies

PRE-ORDER: http://www2.screenarchives.com/title...NNY-ROSE-1984/

Courtesy of Twilight Time

Quote:
"[A] show stopper! It's a wonderful film!" -Los Angeles Magazine

Nominated for two Academy Awards®, Broadway Danny Rose is a "wickedly funny" (Playboy) and irreverent tribute to the zany world of New York lounge acts. A "delectable" (Variety) combination of dry wit, hilarious slapstick and biting philosophical subtext, Woody Allen's Broadway Danny Rose is "tender, poignant, wistful and marvelous" (L.A. Weekly), and "one of [Allen's] very best" (The New York Times)!

Saddled with piano playing parrots, one-legged tap dancers and stuttering ventriloquists, Danny Rose (Allen) is the all-time loser of show-biz agents - until a sudden nostalgia craze lands his top act, scheming crooner Lou Canova, a coveted gig at the Waldorf. But when Lou refuses to go unless Danny escorts Lou's Mafia-moll mistress Tina (Farrow) to the concert, the stage is soon set for disaster. Taken with Tina, taken in by Lou, and even taken hostage by gangsters, Danny embarks on a hilarious and bittersweet adventure in his desperate bid to ensure that the show does go on... before it's curtains for more than his career!

Glad to see this is getting released... an often overlooked Allen. I suppose this is the end of the MGM/Fox releases that they've been releasing on their own in January for the last two years (Annie/Manhattan & Sleeper/Hannah). I hope that's not the case, but if it must be TT, so be it.

Yes, it's been the end since TT got Crimes and Misdemeanors. If MGM/Fox didn't feel the need to release that movie on their own, they're likely done with releasing any other Allen movie too. Pretty unfortunate.

Hopefully with how popular he is in other counties, a proper boxset with these TT titles get released.

That's been my thoughts on it, too. If MGM didn't feel the need to hang onto that one, then we're likely done with any catalog Allen from them.

I'm just glad someone is releasing these on Blu-ray. I intend on getting all three Allen movies being released by Twilight Time.

Just want to chime in and say that BDR is my favorite announcement from TT's March/April slate, along with Alfredo Garcia. This is one of the best Woody's movies, and genuinely underrated flick.

You and Mifune are definitely onto something here.

The Front (1976). He didn't direct it, though.

I have to agree. It's one of my favorite Allen films. I intend on getting all the Allen films TT has announced.

Admittedly, I do have mixed feelings on this. While I don't have a problem with Twilight Time's business model, knowing that we'll have to shill out $30 plus shipping for releases that, outside of the isolated scores, could have been available for $10 had MGM decided to release them is rather depressing.

On the other hand, it's certainly likely that without this, we wouldn't be seeing ANY of these titles coming out. After all, Crimes and Misdemeanors isn't exactly Interiors or Shadows and Fog in terms of popularity. I'd argue it's on par with Hannah and Her Sisters, at the very least. Ultimately, I'm happy at least one company is putting them out, as Allen is one of my favorite filmmakers.

It would be nice if Twilight Time did something different here, like some sets or double features, especially if they kept the price for a two-fer at $30.

I doubt it. They pay ALL licensing fees upfront, unlike most (if not all other labels), so it's win-win for the studios to license to them. But it means they have to maintain their pricing model in order to (try and) guarantee a profit. They pretty much break even after 1500 units, so the remaining 1500 is where they make a profit.

They probably looked at the returns for the 4 they released and decided it wasn't in their favor to release any more. I don't necessarily blame the studios for licensing out titles… mores I blame the people for not buying them when they are released. Nothing a business can do if the product they put out doesn't make the profit they want. We'll see how well they sell for TT.

I'm in for this and Crimes and Misdemeanors. I dread paying $70+ for the two of them but if I must, so be it.

I would never buy a title for $30.. no matter who, what, or whose movie it is. That's strictly for fans, that's who they cater for. Me, the average person will not buy this overpriced things.

Was hoping to add all Woody Allen films released on Blu-ray in the U.S. to my collection. Guess not.

I'm enough of an Allen fan where I'll still buy them (I got my copy of C&M not that long ago), it just pains my wallet to do so now...

Hopefully the Allen BD's will get released somewhere else for a more affordable price... Can't encourage Twilight Time and their extremely overpriced products.

That's what I'm hoping. I bought the UK "Oliver!" DVD because the transfer was the same, and it was much cheaper. Isn't Woody Allen fairly popular in Europe? Maybe there'll be some European Blu-Rays. If not, I'll have to be selective in the TT Blu-Rays I buy.
