Another review

http://www.dvdauthority.com/reviews.asp?reviewid=5596

"Next" is directed by a favorite director of mine, Lee Tamahori, who has directed a few of my recent favorite films: "The Edge" and "Mulholland Falls" and he's got a real sense as to how shots look and look good on screen. "Next" is presented in a 2.35:1 AVC HD transfer that, for the most part, looks positively amazing (the HD DVD had a VC-1 transfer). I noticed no edge enhancement, colors seemed vibrant and strong and the detail level is absolutely amazing (you can read the meters on slot machines a couple rows away). There were a few scenes that seemed to have a bit of roughness to them and some of the CGI scenes seemed a bit "jumpy" but that might have just been me. On the whole, "Next" delivers a fine-looking transfer and viewers won't be disappointed.

Yet the review at themanroom says:

Quote:
Paramount has ported the AVC MPEG-4 encoded 1080p transfer directly from the previous HD DVD and after watching the film for a second time on Blu-ray Disc, the presentation is naturally identical and equally as impressive.
What a joke of a review. A simple look at the bitrate clock would indicate it goes further than HD-DVD could, so even if it also had a AVC encode, they are not the same

Ya, I think the review on this site was saying 31+ at times. That's above what I would ever expect to find on an HD-DVD (possibly above its limit, but I never remember what that limit is)

Some scenes actually peak in the upper 30s, creeping into the lower 40s on a few occasions. Just flipping through chapters my PS3 is showing anywhere to upper 20s to upper 30s with the aforementioned spikes. I'm going to update the review to reflect that the average fluctuates from the lower to mid 30s on average rather than 31-32 as I originally stated.

Is this a re-release or a new release? I ask because Moviestop doesn't have it in their system, they said they could order it for me but did not have an arrival date or estimate. At Amazon, there's a couple used but none in stock through Amazon....what's the dealio?

Makes me think the Home Theater Forum review isn't correct either since they seemed to indicate it's indentical (unless they just didn't notice a difference). Anyway, doesn't matter for me since I plan to get it to upgrade the DVD. I'm just unsure if I'll get it Tuesday or not (probably so though).

Do you believe in Mr. Bracke....Always there is something wrong with his reviews even when it is good or bad...How comes till now 3 sites gives a wonderful presentation for PQ whereas Mr.Brack disagree.

PQ: 4/5
SQ: 4/5

I don't trust this review for time-being.

I had the U.K version of Next on Blu-ray which is VC-1 encoded and features DTS-HD HR @2 Mbps. The PQ was easily demo material besides few Jaggies ( ) in couple of scenes.[/url]
The jaggies are in every scene that has enough HF detail to make them stand out.
Question is, are the jaggies on the US edition too?

When he gives a release a low score for PQ that is almost enough to make me want to get it since he is so consistently wrong.

It will definitely be present in the U.S version too.

Saw it on Starz HD or one of those channels. The movie had potential until the end. Sort of a cop out if you ask me......

His seems in line with the Home Theater Forum review.

Next is encoded in the MPEG-4 AVC codec at 1080p with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The video presentation is solid, but not spectacular.

I also rented this on OnDemand. The movie was a train wreck, but did have a creative concept. They could have done so much more with this movie, it gets corny after about 30 min.s...

It is one of the few movies (North/I Know Who Killed Me ) that I literally want that time of my life back.
