Default Pro Tip: Insure Your Blu-ray Collection

I did not and lost all of it in a fire a little while ago (more than 400 titles). It turns out that rental/home insurance is very affordable. Stupid me. Let my experience serve as a warning.

I've now began rebuilding the old movie collection. Up to 2 titles now!

I'm sorry to hear that. That sounds horrific. If you want, I could help you out with a few titles. Just PM me.

No, it was my mistake and I have to pay for it. Thanks for the offer though, awfully nice of you.

So sorry to hear that, that is awful. Fortunately, blurays are replaceable. I hope no one was hurt. Way to get back to collecting.

Doublecheck your insurance plan as I've been told that my vinyl collection wouldn't be covered and I need a rider attached. The cost of which is more than double the premium of the apartment insurance.

I'm sorry that to hear about your collection. I'm glad that you're safe, though.

I've had State Farm Renters Insurance for almost a decade now.

I keep meaning to double check with them about the coverage of my music collection (roughly 1,000 CDs) and movie collection (see under my avatar). These are "just things", but I would hate to have to replace them in the event of a tragedy.

Unfortunately, I found out the hard way a few years ago that renters insurance does not cover flood damage, just as homeowner insurance does not cover flood damage. I was living on the bottom floor of an apartment complex during the "500-year flood" that hit Atlanta in 2009, and I lost quite a few possessions. I'm now on the top floor of an apartment building. I urge anyone who lives in a flood plain area (or a potential flood plain area) to get flood insurance separately.

seriously double check....
HT insurance will require every serial number for EACH piece... to insure your movies you would need a detailed list of every title.. and the insurance will be INSANE!

I tried to insure my comics collection and literally i after 2 years the insurance price surpassed the value!

My apartment was robbed about ten years ago and my stock State Farm renters insurance replaced all the DVDs I could remember, except those that were out of print (a few Criterions). I just had to provide the list, and they had a company send me the replacements.

Out of curiosity, did they provide cash for the OOP Criterions?

I may have misunderstood the OP but I took it as the OP didn't have renters/homeowners insurance at all.

Back in the 1990s, the homeowner's insurance covered it when about 500 CDs were stolen.

My apartment complex mandates that we have renters insurance as a condition of our lease. We are free to shop around for whatever provider we wish to use, as long as the insurance coverage meets minimum standards. I had renters insurance before this was mandated, though, and mine exceeds the standards anyway.

Good luck WeeBey with the rebuild of your collection.

Strange. Over here, you cannot rent without insuring at the same time.

That's what I was thinking. I know that my firearms are covered, as well as my wife's jewelry, etc., so I always assumed that if it is inside the home, it is covered.

That really sucks you lost it all, but good you didn't lose anything that really matters (I hope no irreplaceable pictures or anything like that got burned up too), but people mean the most.
Also refreshing to see someone admit a mistake instead of looking for blame to place somewhere else. Big props on that lost art of owning your own mistakes!
