BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD Star Quvenzhané Wallis in Consideration to Lead Will Gluck’s ANNIE Remake

Though it was only a few weeks ago that we learned that Willow Smith was no longer going to be starring in the Will Smith and Jay-Z-produced musical remake of Annie, it appears that director Will Gluck (Friends with Benefits) already has his sights set on a pretty big get to lead the film. EW reports that Beasts of the Southern Wild star (and Best Actress nominee) Quvenzhané Wallis is apparently in consideration to star in the redo, though the magazine cautions that Gluck and the producers have yet to make any firm casting decisions. Though EW makes sure to note that nothing is firm, I actually think Wallis is an inspired choice to lead the musical. This would be a major leap for the 9-year-old actress who made her film debut with the stunning Beasts, and I’m inclined to believe that she just might be keen on taking the gig given her penchant for dancing at recent awards ceremonies. In addition to being flat-out adorable, Wallis showed considerable promise with her work in the Sundance indie and I’m interested to see how her career blossoms from here.

One hopes that her parents and handlers will ensure that the girl’s childhood isn’t sacrificed for an acting career. We should hear more with regards to the Annie adaptation soon, as the goal is to start production later this year for a fall 2014 release.

This is our first look at the new Annie. Pint-sized Oscar nominee Quvenzhané Wallis was in New York on Wednesday for the first official day of filming the Will Smith and Jay Z-produced modernized musical reboot. (Sure, we saw her last week riding a bike, presumably in character — but for the record, those shots were taken during pre-production of the film, the studio confirmed with Yahoo! Movies.)

Wallis brings all sorts of adorable to the role of everybody's favorite little orphan. (And, based on her remarkable turn in "Beasts of the Southern Wild," we're sure she'll be able to provide the requisite spunk to "Annie.")

Starring opposite the 10-year-old cutie in the new take on classic Broadway musical is Jamie Foxx (seen above, playing Daddy Warbucks opposite a tumbling Wallis).
"Annie," also featuring Cameron Diaz (mean Miss Hannigan) and Rose Byrne (Warbucks's assistant, Grace), is due in theaters Christmas Day 2014.

This movie needs the Baz Luhrmann touch to it which I was surprised to see that he wasn't directing it. I thought Gatsby was great and really enjoyed the modern day rap/hip hop with the Jazz infusion and the collaboration between Baz Luhrmann and Jay Z.

Also Cameron Diaz sticks out like a sore thumb to me.

I love musicals, and I've always liked Annie, so I was staying optimistic. This trailer sneak peek does not impress me though. Cameron Diaz is no Carol Burnett, that's for sure. But I'll see it with an open mind. I am still hoping for it to be good.

At least it sounds like the songs stuck to the original style. I was sure Jay Z was gonna make it a hip-hop Annie, like that Hard Knock Life remake.

I thought it was hilarious how they were trying to explain the difference between this Annie and the original movie. "Another difference is this Annie has street smarts"

Ummm the original Annie was street smart too the whole Orphan thing.

Holy crap, Cameron Diaz does look awful in this. It would have been better if she just played like a regular biotch as she did in The Counselor and Bad Teacher rather than playing like an exaggerated villain in this Annie film.
