Default Aliens vs. Starship Troopers

Both films are similar in many ways but which do you consider to be the better film that you enjoy most?

I like Starship Troopers, the first one only. But no way it would be any better than Aliens

The Book of Starship Troopers is better than the movie even though its drastically different.

Aliens will always win this fight. The Xenomorph back then was still the most terrifying creature to see on film.

You can't really compare the two.

One's a haunted house picture, the other is a cowboy movie.

Over the two I'll always choose Aliens for better pretty much everything, but Starship Troopers has that 'humor' that Aliens lacks.

They're each good in their own way, IMHO, but they're two totally different types of films.

The assertion that they're similar in many ways makes me sad. They're similar in pretty much one way: they have soldiers fighting bugs. Otherwise they're completely different movies and completely different thematically.

Everyone knows how brilliant Alien is and I agree but I thought I would spend a minute about the brilliance of the Starship Troopers, it is one of the most misunderstood movies of all time .. but that is part of it's brilliance, on one layer it plays as a dumbed down cowboy movie while truly it is a ruthlessly funny satire and self-aware sendup of militarism.

It's over the top fascistic rhetoric and shades of Animal Farm form a serious critique of the military industrial complex, American foreign policy, and a culture that chooses reactionary violence over reason.

It deserves another look if you have not watched the film in this light. So go ahead take another look and think about it ... really think about it.

That being said every sequel after the first movie is complete tripe.

It sounds like you're thinking of Alien rather than Aliens - Alien is the haunted house film (and has the more serious tone). Aliens features a bunch of marines tasked to destroy aliens, and features plenty of humour and action, which does make it somewhat similar in style to Starship Troopers.

Alien is definitely the more serious of the two, but at its core Aliens is still a haunted house film but a return to the same house. Bigger house, more 'ghosts', but still a house. Haunted Mansion might be a better term

Even with a handful of light hearted moments intentionally and unintentionally thanks to Bill Pullman, Aliens is more like The Thing than it is Starship Troopers, and The Thing definitely falls into the Haunted House category.

My opinion, of course.

Had me thinking of Independence Day for a moment, another alien war movie. Of course you mean Bill Paxton.
