Except for the movies I don't like JUST BECAUSE I don't like a particular genre (Avatar, Avengers, Conan the Barbarian etc) I think the newest Tarantino's movies are pretty much overrated :/ It's a pity, because I loved Pulp Fiction ever since, same as Reservoir Dogs and projects he just took part in, such as Desperado or True Romance...

Django is more or less ok but Inglorious Basterds were too much of a fantasy to me and except for Brad Pitt speaking Italian, it was barely amusing.

I actually enjoy it myself as something of a guilty pleasure, but I'm constantly stunned by how much ligit love it gets. It's a ridiculous movie.

Oh, and on that same note:

Yup, size of grapefruits and made of solid steel

Don't get me wrong, I like Nolan's films but I admit people give them more credit at times than they deserve. Problem with Avengers is that people are not willing to admit it isn't great. They seem to be on the Whedon bandwagon - he was always too smart for Hollywood and they finally caught up with him and see how great he is. People don't want to admit that while it is an entertaining movie it is also a pretty predictable and not totally original film. Did anyone really think Iron Man was going to die? You didn't moan and do a face-palm when you heard of the secret backdoor to stop the weapon of mass destruction?

I don't think the Nolan movies are ashamed to be comic book movies but why can't a comic book movie be like this? Look at the origins of Batman - no special powers, very real world based, exactly the opposite of what a comic was supposed to be in the age of Superman. I can't say every superhero is going to work with this appoach - I think Man of Steel could have used a little more fantasy and a little less reality - but for Batman, it was the right move. You have a guy dressing up as a bat, going out in the streets at night to beat up criminals. And that is normal? Nolan tried to explain it a little in terms that went beyond the comic reasons - I don't have an issue with that.

I have no interest in the Marvel vs DC thing but to me it's clear that Nolan's Batman movies are more overrated than The Avengers, which is really saying something.

I think Joss Whedon's fans are slightly worse than Nolan's, though.

Bashing movies on a site about movies? I don't like you already.
I don't think that's fair, if it seems as if that's the case I'm sorry. I simply didn't see any threads on these so I decided to make one. I find that seeing movies people tend not to like (especially ones I enjoy) interest me and shows me the difference between tastes vs simply seeing what everyone likes.

Dredd script was first and your taste in movies is worse. The Raid is a 7/10 at best whereas Dredd is an easy 9/10.

One I watched once - that was enough

The other Ive watched at least 7 times

Yep Im with you there. New Tarantino films are overrated. Inglourious was good to a point (especially the first 20 minutes) but got worse as it went on. And so did Django - again, started well and went downhill at pace (especially when we get to DiCaprio's house...)

I couldnt care less about Marvel or DC but Nolan's Batman films are very good indeed whereas Marvel's endless generic dull superhero films just send me to sleep.

I suppose if I was a kid Id have a different opinion though

To be clear, overrated doesnt necessarily mean bad. Jaws is considered the best horror movie of all time, making it overrated. When I watched Citizen Kane for the first time, I liked it. Good movie, but certainly not the greatest of anything.

I think the DC vs Marvel thing is a joke too - kind of like you can be Trek fan or Star Wars fan but not both

I will agree about the Whedon fans. I admit that he kind of had it rough in Hollywood but really, Buffy went for several years, so did Angel, Dollhouse had a couple seasons, Firefly had one and a movie - not a bad run really. But from what fans say, you would think he never got anything on tv or if he did, he was fired right away and the studio took over and made a fortune without him. Hell, I'd settle for his career before Avengers.

I think Close Encounters of the Third Kind and ET are both overrated - they are sappy movies that really don't make a lot of sense. Look at Close Encounters - they don't know if the ship will land or who is on it but as people start walking off they can say "he disappeared in 1947 but he hasn't aged at all". Do they have a list of every person who ever disappeared?

I agree with bluearth that overrated doesn't mean bad. Studios push movies and they eventually build a legend that is undeserved. I think in some cases it is because people hear about what they director wanted to do and couldn't so they look at the movie and what it could have been instead of just taking what is on the screen. How many times to you hear someone complaining about a scene not making sense and someone says "well in this deleted scene/in the commentary, it is all explained"? Sorry but that don't cut it. But Citizen Kane is a great film - probably the best drama ever made. I think that is something that we need to do - to lump everything together and say "this is the best" is tough. We might need to open this up a bit and catagorize the films a little.

Just so I'm clear, the goal of this thread is to post movies I don't like that a lot of other people and critics do, right?

true.

overrated formula = Film PERCEIVED rating - Film ACTUAL rating

so the higher ranked/more prestigious a film, the more "overrated potential" it has, IF its actual rating doesn't match up
