Thanks for the info! Just ordered (~$35 usd). I know people wait for the criterion edition, but I want the Italian subtitles and criterion seems to be allergic to native language subtitles. Just wish it was region free so I could lend it to my friends.

Default Plays on Region A!

It plays on my region A PS3! Looks and sounds great! Subtitles are in and out of the picture.

A 5.1 track instead of the original mono? I'm keeping the excellent German BD...

The PS3 reports it as 2 channel linear PCM, but the back of the case does say 5.1. Interesting. There are no audio options on the main menu, just subtitles.

I would never suggest you get rid of your German BD. Do you know if it was it mastered from the same source? Just before the beginning there are a couple of screens with some paragraphs in Italian detailing the restoration work. It mentions some serious damage to the beginning of the film and what they did to fix it. It also mentions they worked from a 4K scan.

Phew, that's a typo then! The BR.com page needs to be corrected, then!

ps. yes, the German BD (and the French one too, if I'm not mistaken) features the resto details before the credits. I compared the German and the French a while ago: they share the same excellent print - and almost the same transfer, around 40GB for the film.

Did either of the discs have a superior transfer in any way? Very keen to purchase this.

Also, is the spine art in a foreign language?

The French and the German are virtually identical; don't know about the Italian one.
As for the spine, here you can see the French one. The German one has "La Dolce Vita" written in yellow. Also, be aware that the French one is only available in a combo edition.

Default Artwork

Here's what the artwork looks like for the Italian version. I can't compare it to the French or German, but it looks and sounds great to me :-)

Just for fun, I took a cap from the German BD (the French one is from DVDclassik)
French (left) vs German (right)

AR is more or less 2.333 (FR) vs 2.337 (GER).
Cheers!

The covers and those screenshots have convinced me to to buy one of these versions.

Confirmed that the Italian version's film will play fine on a Region A PS3, but the extras will not. You will need a multi-region player to play the extras. The film looks wonderful, and at least some of the extras are English-friendly!

Does anyone know if the Australian blu-ray is struck from the same transfer?
