It's a tie. They're both different, but equally good. |

Here's a broad topic. Consider picture quality, audio quality, special features, and packaging of the both entities' Blu-ray offerings.
In fairness, let's pit the first 3 seasons of GoT against the LotR Extended Edition. NO SPOILERS! Last edited by Jar Jar Stinks; 03-28-2014 at 12:49 AM. |

Audio - Game of Thrones
Video - Game of Thrones Extras - Game of Thrones Story - Game of Thrones Casting - Game of Thrones I'm not biased... Jackson and Company really changed way too much in the movies for them to even really be recognized as adaptations... |

even your vote that GoT has better audio is questionable.....i'll give you GoT has the better song but overall I give that one to LOTR as well. comparing these 2 is just as asinine as comparing The Avengers to The Dark Knight. I've read LOTR 2 or 3x now....I've actually found it tedious to read in more than one spot......I would almost go so far as to say Tolkein took himself waaaay to seriously in his writing. never felt that way while reading Martin's books.....I'm on my 2nd read through of those right now actually. |

Video: Thrones
Really no debate here for me, Since Thrones is super Sharp. but neither of them are bad. Audio: Tie I only have TV speakers, so I'm not really qualified to judge this. Extras: Rings I actually debated giving this to Thrones, since I've actually watched most of those. But the Rings extras are epic in scope. Maybe I'll actually finish them some year. Source Material: Thrones Back when there was only animated Rings movies, I tried really hard to read the books. I got through Hobbit and Fellowship, but couldn't get through Towers or King. It's probably the only movie I think is better then the book. As oppossed to Thrones, which I couldn't put down for all 5 books, and can't wait for the sixth. Enjoyability: Tie In the end though, I voted for tie though, because they are equally enjoyable in different ways. Comparing movies and TV series really isn't fair unless of course its something like the Xfiles movie. |

I know I do but I'm trying to go through all my blind buys (at least 50 films) before I go through my previously viewed films. Plus it's so hard to find time to fit in a four hour long movie. |

On the other hand, the only sexual relationship we see in LotR is between Sam and Frodo. Boring. |

You shouldn't compare the material of two entirely different authors who wrote their work in different centuries. I haven't read the books for GoT but I can tell just by the show that it's masterfully written. It just seems spiteful to hate on it in a thread comparing the PQ of the blu-rays, lol. Plus it's HBO. Did you expect it to be family friendly? |

There are some interesting things in the GOT S3 extras but mostly it's a bunch of very hit-and-miss commentaries and some puff pieces on the lore and characters that are mostly just archived on disc from HBO's site. Even if you take the documentaries out of the equation, the commentaries are night-and-day difference in quality. All three movies have two tracks that rank among the best I've ever heard (the Peter Jackson/writers one, and the cast one) while the GOT ones aren't even on every episode and seem to have rather arbitrary personnel on them. The S1 and S2 ones with the kid actors are AWFUL and some of the other actors are very much of the "sit there and watch in silence and then go 'that was a good bit of violence!' and then go silent for another couple minutes" vein of commentary. In S3 they attempted to mitigate this a bit by usually putting the director on the track along with actors so at least someone has something to say, but it's still not going to threaten the LOTR ones anytime soon! I have a hard time making it through the LOTR movies after getting acclimated to GOT, the writing and characterization is just so much deeper on GOT that I have a hard time going back. Almost every line Gimli has in the Two Towers/ROTK just makes me cringe. I also am annoyed to no end by the couple of scenes scientifically designed to make audiences cheer where all the sound cuts out for some character to deliver some kind of sarcastic bad-ass line. Ah well. They're totally different audiences, I just have a hard time dealing with some aspects of the LOTR movies anymore, plus I honestly think the theatrical cuts of Two Towers/ROTK were greatly superior pacing-wise and thus never want to watch them. I should probably buy the theatrical cuts while they're on sale for dirt cheap. |
