He sure did.

As to point number 3 in your previous post:
[Show spoiler]
I think they looked beautiful. Even when they merged into one being that looked like a sophisticated version of what we saw in CEOTK, it was only short and it worked well for the movie. I was a little concerned when I heard of the alien plot, but to me Harrison Ford and Cate Blanchet as character opposites and the very short appearance of the little grey men made it work.

[Show spoiler] i had no problem with the way the aliens looked at all, until the very end when the 13 merged into 1. i like how they made him resemble a grey and not look retarded (cough war of the worlds cough) however the CGI just wasn't there. he simply looked fake and CGI.

Then you'd have to ask Lucas, Spielberg and Ford to retire as well as they are involved in this complicity. Nobody held a gun at Spielberg, Ford or even Allen to make this movie. It's not like they are hard up for money either.

Default Indy Review from an Opening Nighter - NO SPOILERS

I saw this movie last night at a midnight viewing. I am a huge Indy fan. I'm also a huge Spielberg/Lucas collaboration fan. However, considering that it was 19 years ago since the last movie, I went into the theater very apprehensively.

I wanted so badly for this movie to be great. I would have settled for good. Turns out, I didn't even get fair! I regret having to say that it was AWFUL! It's more than a little disappointing when a film doesn't even live up to LOW expectations. The acting was bad, not that you could do much with the dialogue they were given. The writing was bad (dialogue, story). The pacing was extremely uneven, even for an Indy movie. The tone was so light hearted that you never felt like anyone was in any real peril. You need to think that at least ONE of the good guys could die. It almost felt like I was watching a spoof on the Indy movies. I half expected Weird Al to jump out at any moment.

What is apparent is that everyone involved (Spielberg, Lucas, Ford) are past their prime for a movie of this type. So much time was spent capturing the spirit of the original movies that nothing original happened IN the movie. I know that many of you are going to go see it, so I will not give any story details away. However, I just left the theater asking, "Really? Is that really the story you came up with?"

On a positive note, there were some very nice action scenes. The visual effects were, at times, quite good. But this can't counter the weakness of the film overall.

No one wanted to see this film made more than I did. Maybe that is the problem. We all wanted it so badly that nobody asked if the movie SHOULD be made or not.

Die-hard fans, go see the movie prepared. Here's hoping we never see a Shia LaBeouf Indy movie in the future!!

Saw it at midnight and going back again now. To keep it short the movie is extremely over the top and silly. The word goofy comes to mind at times. The over the top plot points as some have mentioned are not what bothered me. It was the things some of the characters did that was so impossibly outlandish they make you cringe. There is so many of these moments its what you remember most when you walk out. Other than that the movie is also at the same time extremely fun. If you can settle in for some silly goofy fun the new Indy fits fine and becomes a flawed and different addition to the franchise.

Heading back again to see how I view it with out any expectations and years of waiting.

I went and saw it at a midnight showing also and I had high expectations too. There were some really good parts and also some bad parts, they should of edited some of the parts down and made the movie shorter, one or two of the chase/fight scenes could have been shorter, they seemed to go on and on. It also try's to be too humorous, the other ones have always had humor but it always seemed subtle to me not just trying to be funny.

Bottom line, a Raiders or Lost Crusade it's not, but I still enjoyed it even with the few flaws it has, I will definitely buy it when it comes out on BD.

I guess to some degree I take a sense of ownership, and I get embarrassed and uncomfortable because I'm actually watching this happen. Like I said, there are two such scenes, fairly close to each other, both involving Shia LaBeouf. I guarantee you'll know the scenes when you see them, and once you see the first and think it's over, the second is even worse.

My main complaint is that Spielberg said they were keeping CGI to a minimum. My ass. Much of the film, especially compared to the originals, feels like you're watching people in front of a green screen. Even the opening scenes in the desert feel like they're shot on a soundstage. The scenes I mentioned above are directly attributable to the presence of CGI, the most laughable one incontrovertibly so. As such, I didn't feel the sense of danger that I felt in any of the action scenes of the originals, and this disappointed me. The action, and therefore the characters, didn't seem as real to me.
Before I read on in the thread I wanted to comment on this. I felt this exact way in Temple of Doom. (haven't seen Indy 4 yet). The part where the raft 'floats' down the cliff, the part when they are on the cliff and the water shoots out of the cave. It was that embarrassing feeling that you're describing. Like, is it okay to still love this movie after that cheese? The bad thing is I felt this way about it when I was like 13.

Still love Indy though

ill try to say a few good things about him.

He will probabaly be dead in less than 20 years, which means he can't screw up that much more.

he has 1 less chin than Rosie O'Donnell.

he has furthered technological advancments in movie making quite a bit.

his old stuff (american graffiti, star wars, THX 1138) is good.

however, the man is now completely out of touch with what movie fans want. if i wanted to watch the crap he puts in to movies, id watch more nick jr.

ya know.....i saw this at midnight and my friends and I are huge Indy fans. First of all we all loved it and plan on seeing it again in theaters. But we heard many people complaining saying it was a waste of money.

Got me thinking, Indy always has those over the top moments such as

SPOILER

Shia swinging with monkeys, Indy surving the Nuke

SPOILER

But then it kicks you right back with a badass action sequence. And as far as the MAIN complaint.

SPOILER

How much more far fetched and terrible is the UFO and Alien subplot compared to the Arc of the Covenant, or a temple of doom or some witch doctor? Compared to Downey Junior creating a function Iron suit in the middle of a terrorist camp. I just think people too harshly judge things on perception rather than taking the movie for what it is...Indy is non fictional, its a fictitious fantasy with realistic undertones of archeology. Its a superhero movie shrouded as a realistic action series.

SPOILER

No, not anymore. It seems he tags everything he does these days with "I wanted it to be a darker film" or "I wanted to pay homage to Saturday morning serials."

The only things cycling through that big bearded melon of his now are things that are 50's-related and oversaturated with silly, goofy CGI.

WOW!!

lets see, he only changed movie making history and practically everyone out there using CGI uses him hence (ILM). Oh and there is his sound studio that is used for many of the movies out today (skywalker sound ranch). oh and he has the most successful and profitable movies series ever (star wars), hence he is a billionaire. he has more ties in the movie business than i know about.

you guys should really cut some slack. He may not be what he use to be years ago, but he has certainly earned his credit for his accomplishments in the movie business

i gave him credit for his older work and his advances in movie making. i don't see what your argument is against my post. however, for everything good this man has done, he has done something equally as awful.

Jar Jar Binks and Howard the Duck cancel out pretty much anything good he has done.
