Default Chinese companies authorized to produce Blu-ray products

Chinese companies authorized to produce Blu-ray products

Eleven Chinese disc manufacturers, including TCL, Malata and Desay, have been authorized by Blu-ray Disc Association to produce Blue-Ray discs, CDs, and disc players next year.

According to president of Blu-ray Disc Association, each of the manufacturers has now turned to BD development since Toshiba's withdrawal from the HD DVD camp in February this year and BDA's member number has increased to 187 while that of International DVD Forum has decreased to 163 from 240.

It is estimated that the demand for consumer electronics and computers adopted with BD technology will reach 5.3 million this year and top 11 million by 2009.
This is good news for future cheaper players.

One would just expect they will be kept on a tighter leash than they were with DVD WRT royalties and piracy.

The veterans will remember Malata. This brand generated a cult-like following among AV enthusiasts in 2001 when it released a player with multi-region playback and PAL-to-NTSC conversion (pretty unique features at the time). Here's hoping they can reuse that know-how (nudge, nudge).

This is the news of the week as far as I am concerned, but it won't get much response from the forum.

Apex had that first. Malata had the first player with those features that didn't totally suck

I still have my Apex 600A in the closet, with it's HAND TRACED circuit boards (yay Chinese slave labor)

Dude,

Once China gets involved its completely over.

They will have that stuff engineered, sliced, diced, laid, re-laid and parlayed in a month.

excellent news...I just hope the quality is still there.

This isn't good news to me, I hate products made in China (i.e. everything). Cheap slave labor, it's killing American business. I'd rather pay the extra dollars to have it made in the USA.

For me i prefer a Sony player manufactured and assembled in China over any other brand made by chinese players. In this way higher quality electronics will be under control by Sony engineers.

If you think they aren't going to be watched like a hawk, and they didn't have to do some heavy upfront deals to get this, you've got another thing coming

I was being sarcastic, Wicks - the whole "lead poisoning from Chinese toys" mess from a few months back. Honestly!

Interesting, wonder if they will try to price dump those players on the market. Would be nice to see more production lines though to keep up with the increased demands the hopefully lower priced chinese players will bring.
