Default 'Creep' - A New Potential Horror Trilogy Starring Mark Duplass

Quote:
‘Creep:’ Mark Duplass’ Horror Film Gets Trilogy Treatment

On the eve of one potential horror franchise from Jason Blum, the producer has just inked a deal for yet another. Creep, produced by Blumhouse and co-written and co-starring Mark Duplass, has just been picked up by Radius/The Weinstein Company with an eye on creating a trilogy. The film premiered at South by Southwest 2014 to solid buzz. It follows a filmmaker who answers a mysterious online ad, only to have his expectations completely shattered. Patrick Brice co-stars, co-wrote and directs.

The Wrap reported the news of the Creep Mark Duplass deal. Here’s the plot description of the film from SXSW:

Quote:
Looking for work, Aaron (Patrick Brice) comes across a cryptic online ad: “$1,000 for the day. Filming service. Discretion is appreciated.”

Low on cash and full of naiveté he drives to a cabin in a remote mountain town where he meets Josef (Mark Duplass), his cinematic subject for the day. Josef is sincere and the project seems heartfelt, so Aaron begins to film. But as the day goes on, it becomes clear that Josef may not be who he says.

Brice’s directorial debut, and produced by Jason Blum (“Paranormal Activity”, “Insidious”) and Mark Duplass (“Safety Not Guaranteed”), “CREEP”’s intense and chilling interplay between its two protagonists shows from the start that this film is not what it seems.
That makes the film sound like one where avoiding spoilers is a must, though, saying this film can become a trilogy at all is sort of a spoiler in itself. This quote from the co-presidents of Radius adds to the mysterious nature of the project:

Quote:
We jumped at the opportunity to work with Mark again and Jason’s involvement was icing on the cake. “Creep” is wry and unnerving with a shock ending that one has come to expect from Blumhouse. The film played through the roof at SXSW and it was abundantly clear that audiences have a huge appetite for these characters.
The “again,” refers to Duplass’ The One I Love, which Russ reviewed at Sundance. That’ll be released by Radius/The Weinstein Company on August 15.

Do you like the idea of Creep instantly being developed into a trilogy?

As someone who can't stand found-footage or mumblecore, I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed this movie. It totally worked for me. Mark Duplass is terrific in it. I loved how the movie eases back and forth between awkward humor and outright creepiness.

Even though a lot of the reviews are saying they don't want to reveal too much because it will spoil the surprise, there really aren't any shocking twists (although there's a rather humorous one about half-way through). It just works better if you go in blindly, because you don't know where the movie is headed. Just don't expect some mind-blowing game-changer at the end of the movie. That's not to say it doesn't end well though, it does have a rather spooky little ending.

Interested to read there are sequels on the way. I will really be looking forward to them.

Release news: Creep will finally be released by Blumhouse / Radius TWC on July 14th, exclusively on NetFlix streaming.

Full article

Quote:
Sometimes films totally drop off the radar to the point that we don’t quite know what even happened to them. That’s precisely what went down with Patrick Brice’s Creep (review), which was supposed to see release last October but then completely vanished. Read on for the latest.

Today brings along with it the good news that Netflix has grabbed exclusive distribution rights to the Blumhouse Productions/Radius-TWC film, and they’re set to make it available for instant streaming on July 14th.

The microbudget horror film stars Patrick Brice as a videographer who answers an online ad to film a stranger (Mark Duplass) in a remote mountain town for a personal project that turns sinister.

Last we heard, the plan was to eventually turn Creep into a trilogy.

Synopsis:
Aaron is an optimistic videographer who decides to come work for Josef after answering his ad on Craigslist. All Aaron has to do is record Josef throughout the day and remain discreet about the entire setup. Josef tells Aaron that he’ll be recording a series of videos for his unborn son, as he’s suffering from a terminal illness and will never be able to see him grow up.

While Josef seems strange, the money is too good for Aaron to pass up, and he agrees to the task. However, as the day progresses, Josef becomes increasingly strange and Aaron finds it difficult to tell whether or not some of the things Josef is saying or doing are truly jokes or actually a sign of true danger and mental instability.

If they were planning a trilogy you'd think they'd do more than just stick it on Netflix streaming.

The movie very well could have been made for free. Duplass and Brice are really the only two people in the movie, so there are no actors to pay. I'm not sure if the house in the woods was rented, but it very well could have been borrowed. There's not really any major stunts or effects. I'm not sure if the Peachfuzz mask was made for the movie or just something they had lying around. But the movie is totally something two friends could have made just for fun with no resources.

In that case, anything NetFlix or Radius TWC paid would be a profit.

I guess they did pay for festival entries though, which is how I saw it.

I turned off the trailer about halfway through because I'm interested and I don't want to see too much in the trailer. Very cool that this will be available on Netflix - can't wait to check it out.

I'm curious why you decided to watch it. Knowing it's 2 things I won't like would be enough to keep me away.

Where did you see it? Traverse City?

^ Yes, I saw it in Traverse City.

I went because I always try to go to the midnights (being a horror fan), regardless of what they are. Only two of the six venues do midnight screenings, and if I remember the other option that night was a short films block. I had never heard of the movie before and didn't really know anything about it, and sometimes that's the fun of film festivals.

Trailer looks bad, but the reviews seem to consistently mention the humor so I'm chalking it up to just a bad trailer.

That makes sense. I was under the impression more info is given at the time. I have yet to go to a festival

What exactly is "mumblecore". I've heard people use this in the past but still don't get what it's supposed to mean.

It's a modest film with just two characters and mostly one location, but I really enjoyed it and at around 75 minutes it doesn't outstay it's welcome. I've always like Mark Duplass and here he turns the sensitive "new man" of so many indie comedy/dramas into something genuinely sinister. It's also the rare found footage film which genuinely has a good reason to be shot that way.

Curious how they'll make this into a trilogy without it getting repetitive, the story struck me as fairly self contained.

A type of very low budget indie comedy or drama about navel gazing 20somethings which made waves on the indie festival circuit a decade ago. Mark Duplass and his brother were two of the main film-makers of that scene.

They're generally unscripted. Just throw a bunch of amateur actors in a room, turn the camera on, and see what happens. I suppose it would be an interesting exercise for actors, but as an audience member I generally find them a chore to watch. Especially since a lot of the actors they choose just aren't that interesting to watch. Creep was a very rare exception.

The wikipedia definition: Mumblecore is a subgenre of independent film characterized by low budget production values and amateur actors, heavily focused on naturalistic dialogue. Filmmakers often assigned to this movement include Andrew Bujalski, Lynn Shelton, Mark Duplass, Jay Duplass, Aaron Katz, Joe Swanberg, and Ry Russo-Young.

There's also a list of mumblecore films on Wikipedia to give you an example.

Thanks for the answers.

I like some indie films, even the kinds others like to call pretentious but this mumblecore sounds well, a tad pretentious. Or a bit too arts fartsy and experimental for me.

Are there any semi-big named mumblecore movies I might have seen? Off the top of my head I don't think I've watched any movies that fit that description recently.
