Default English: DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1

If I do not have DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 but have it in 5.1 and play the 7.1 track will it switch or should I play the dolby 5.1 channel?

I did a search on this with no luck.

thanks,

dan

This may not be an exact answer but it may help.

Other than a few problem discs I think for the most part it should do any switching it needs automaticallly.

DTS-HD MA is designed to downmix 7.1 to 5.1 or 6.1, so you're fine. It also uses a pretty cool speaker repositioning alogirthm for 7.1 setups to reposition the audio based on the actual layout of your speaker setup.

But using lossy Dolby when lossless is available... that would be tragic.

Default 7.1 vs 5.1

Say for example you have a Blu-ray with 7.1 analong outputs and it's plugged into a 7.1 right. You put in a 5.1 movie. What happens to the two surround back channels. Would the dvd player matrix up a couple more channels, have the back channels and side channels play the same sound or maybe the back channels are silent. Anybody know for sure how it works? I haven't bought my dvd player i'm waiting for maybe the upcoming pioneer or the sony 550 if it'll do the job right. This problem may effect which one i get.

Those rears remain silent. I've got the whole 7.1 setup but unfortunately only one movie that plays 7.1 and that's 3:10 to Yuma. Now a movie with 6.1 like X3, I've heard the PS3, which is the player I own, blends the rears on a 7.1 setup so you've got the same sound coming out of both speakers back there.

Because the software decoder was just programmed that way.

If your receiver can do DTS ES Discrete for DVDs and if you want to listen to it that way, bitstream the audio using optical to your receiver.

Go here. You can put in whatever search parameters you want and it will list the blu's that fit.

Every title with 7.1 audio always includes a 5.1 core mix for compatibility. It's mandatory in BD. No discs are recorded with analog.
