USA Cry-Baby (1990) - July 1, 2014

http://www.amazon.com/Cry-Baby-Blu-r...243195&sr=1-64

Quote:
Eisenhower is President. Rock 'n' Roll is king. And Wade "Cry-Baby" Walker is the baddest hood in his high school. Johnny Depp heads up a super cool cast as the irresistible bad boy whose amazing ability to shed one single tear drives all the girls wild - especially Allison Vernon Williams (Amy Locane), a rich, beautiful "square" who finds herself uncontrollably drawn to the dreamy juvenile delinquent and his forbidden world of rockabilly music, fast cars and faster women. Directed by John Waters, Cry-Baby is an outrageous musical comedy that captures the hysterical high-throttle world of 1954.

This is just the US release of the same UK copy which I pre-ordered for £7 (about $10) a couple of years ago. Having my suspicions, I checked the running time and did some research online and found that it is the inferior theatrical cut, which was a compromise Waters had to make in order to secure a PG-13.

The next day, I put it on Ebay and managed to make a few quid profit from it (even after Ebay and PayPal took their cuts) and kept hold of my Director's Edition DVD. After reading reviews, the image on the Blu isn't all that great anyway, containing the usual things found on Universal transfers, and the commentary has merely been trimmed from the DVD version of omit the stuff about the new material.

OK, it might be a bit more shiny, but the DVD version really is the best and most authentic way to see Cry baby as intended.

As to other Waters movies - well, Warner own New Line, and Warner WILL NOT put out unrated or NC-17 copies of movies, so there is the very real possibility that (except Cecil B Demented - another company owns it ) Hairspray, Cry-Baby, Serial Mom and maybe Polyester will be the only Waters movies to be released on Blu.

Wanda's Father: Hi, Wanda honey.

Wanda's mother: You were on the radio.

Wanda: Would you just get me the f--k out of here?

Wanda's mother: What's "f--k" mean, Hector?

Wanda's Father: Oh, Maggie, it's just a teen nonsense word Wanda uses to make herself feel all grown-up.

Wanda's mother: Your Honor, could we take Wanda the f--k home?

OMG This movie rocks!

Haha! I have not seen this movie in a long time. It will be nice to see it in HD. Let's hope the transfer is a good one. It is Universal, after all!

Glad to see this is finally getting a US release! If the Director's Cut isn't included though, I too will be holding onto my DVD.

Theatrical only? What the hell man.. I was hoping I could retire another DVD with this release. I guess I'll wait and read some reviews when this comes out before I jump on it and ditch 'The Director's Cut' DVD.

For those who might not know we'll be missing 7 minutes of footage that was included in the 'Director's Cut.' So, it's not like we're only missing something that adds up to a matter of seconds that's under a minute or something. It seems strangely odd that the theatrical cut of this flick is only PG-13, I haven't seen it in awhile, but I would have guessed an R-rating atleast.

Well a 1980's PG-13 is different from a 2014 PG-13, at least in regards to sex and bad language.

Not one of my fave Waters movies. I'm crossing my fingers for POLYESTER and anything before that.

I already have the import of this (and I'm sure it will probably be the same disc), but I'll still get the US release if it uses better artwork & gets a slipcover.

This is without a doubt John Water's best film, It only sucks because this is getting a theatrical cut BD release... I already have the UK BD from years ago! Watched that tons of times! I want the director's cut on BD!

This from the same company who released Mallarts here with both versions while giving the UK a theatrical only disc. So there may be some hope. Also, all the specs are coming from Amazon who is the most reliable when it comes to info giving. Who knows. Maybe we will get both versions.

Universal has been doing a bang-up job this year with catalog titles.

As a long-time JW fan, I'd definitely have to disagree with this. This one has always disappointed me to some extent. Of course, it's not his worst (that'd be CECIL B. DEMENTED), but it ain't even close to being his best. Gimme FEMALE TROUBLE, PINK FLAMINGOS, POLYESTER, MONDO TRASHO, HAIRSPRAY, and PECKER anytime before this -- A DIRTY SHAME and SERIAL MOM too. I'd put this higher up than DESPERATE LIVING, though.
