I wouldn't care if they all were based on movies IF the content was good.

Crystal Lake is finally reopening on the small-screen.

While Platinum Dunes works out their remake for 2015, Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films and Crystal Lake Entertainment have set a deal to produce a new hourlong dramatic series based upon the characters and settings of Friday The 13th, Deadline reports.

Sean S. Cunningham, who helmed the 1980 original, will be executive producer along with EFO Films principals Randall Emmett & George Furla, Mark Canton of Atmosphere Entertainment MM, Steve B. Harris of Diversion3 Entertainment, and Ted Fox of Fox Entertainment. Also producing is Horror Inc. president Robert Barsamian, who produced the features.

Bill Basso (Terminator) and Jordu Schell (Avatar) have been set to script “a storyline that re-imagines Jason in multiple time periods.”

The original was set at a summer camp, closed because of the drowning of an unattended child. Promiscuous counselors tried to re-open the place, but they began dying. Jason actually took root as the indestructible villain in the second film, with his signature hockey goalie mask. “The series is contemporary, focusing on the eclectic characters of Crystal Lake who are forced to confront the return of the killer, as new secrets about his wacky family are revealed.”

Roy Knyrim (Gods and Monsters) of SOTA FX will coordinate the special make-up effects for the series.

“Jason Voorhees is synonymous with the genre and we plan to build on this legacy with a provocative and compelling take that expands upon the storylines that have already thrilled millions worldwide,” explained Cunningham. Said Barsamian: “Expect the show to take viewers in some exciting new directions that we’re confident will not only excite existing fans of Friday The 13th but also attract new audiences to the situations and characters that inhabit the small town of Crystal Lake.”

Few sites are just reporting it as a remake while others say new entry. Personally I shouldn't have said it's not a remake as we don't know that 100% yet, I jumped the gun.

Unless it's a direct remake of the 2009 movie or part 1, I'll consider it a new entry like parts 2-11 have been.

Wrong. How many times does this have to be corrected?

1. Mrs. Voorhees was the killer in the 1st film.
2. Jason wore a burlap sack over his head in 2nd film.
3. Jason finds and starts wearing the hockey mask in the 3rd film.

I want to see Jason as a child with his Mother and where was his Dad? Who was he? Freddie Krueger? Did Jason have any siblings? Were they 'normal'? If the show contains flashback material focusing on this type of stuff then it could work.

And most of them are excellent, so it really doesn't matter what they're based on. As long as the content is good, I'm happy.

Atmosphere is really important to F13. Hope they get it right.

My biggest concern is network. I'm thinking either Chiller or FX. Can't really see AMC doing this. Maybe HBO.

Please not Chiller, unless they switch to HD(for Directv). HBO would be ideal!

I see this on Showtime, perhaps Starz....... HBO is running full right now. I half suspect this to be on F/X for some reason though....

I love FX, as they always seem to have a solid line up...but I wish they would upgrade from 720 to 1080. Shows like The Americans, which is intentially shot soft, really suffer from compression artifacts.

AMC shows a lot of the Friday the 13th movies... so I wouldn't count them out for something like this. they also show a lo of gore on Walking Dead, so they wouldn't shy away from it for content.

Will the show take place in Crystal Lake and how prevalent will Jason be within the new television series?

From Sean via BD:
"I can say the show does take place in Crystal Lake and Jason will most certainly let his presence be known.

Jason Voorhees will be an integral part of the series and he will definitely be ‘in character [laughs]. As we wrestle with the passage of time a new issue became how did Jason age? Did he age at all or is he the same as he was back in the day? Fortunately our special effects team led by Bill Basso, Jordu Schell and Roy Knyrim are on the case. Their work is amazing and the end result is both disturbing and fitting with the story we’re hoping to tell. We will be releasing more information around Comic-Con."

Is Tommy Jarvis part of the plans of the show, and will the new episodes tie in with the films?

In reference to Tommy Jarvis in the show:
From Sean via BD: “I’m sorry. Who? Stay tuned.”

As for the show and films being linked:
“We’ll have to wait and see! I don’t want to be cute, but that’s one of the core issues which will define us.How can we balance all that’s gone before with something new and pertinent today? But we are certainly not turning our back on what fans know and love about Friday the 13th.”

How much will the new television series be censored and how much will it push the boundaries of network television?

From Sean via BD: “Pushing the envelope has been part of the Friday the 13th legacy, and I don’t expect that to change. It’s a great time for us… We’re at a place where we can actually do a eries which satisfies fan expectations and, more importantly, will allow us to tell stories which can attract an even wider audience. The filters on violence and sex and language which used to exist in network television are quickly disappearing. There is a tremendous appetite for well-told stories, regardless of how horrifying the themes may be. Hannibal, American Horror Story, Fargo, True Detective, True Blood, Walking Dead… the list goes on and on. These are series which could not have been done well even ten years ago.”

Thanks for posting that! Really allays any fears I had.

I really like that folks with reverence to the original source material are finally getting to make stuff. The remake thing comes and goes but this last round was particularly terrible, and in the horror/sci-fi/genre world, you can remake what was originally bad (Battlestar Galactica) and make it work, but trying to remake successful stuff rarely really works.

I would really love to see the director of Part VI involved - not only do I think he was the best director in the series, but because he has such a unique perspective of what made the franchise so good and "gets it". His was also the only original film to really build on the Jason mythology - something that will really make or break this series.

Can't wait for it, but, it has to be good, just like the films.
Also, it has to be 13 episodes per season.
