Default 1950s Sci-Fi

I love 1950s Sci Fi but have a harder time finding these films on blu ray. What are as one go to older Sci Fi movies that are available on blu ray? Streaming Services that have some good titles? Any discussion on these titles in general? Forgive me if this is in the wrong section. Feel free to movie or delete.

There's some pretty good stuff out there. This is just from skimming my collection...

Right now Forbidden Planet probably leads the pack (it's a great disc) but I'm hoping it eventually gets knocked off by The War of the Worlds.

And FYI, the three-disc release of The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008) includes a BD copy of the 1951 film. It doesn't include the extras from the standalone 1951 release but it's still something to keep in mind.

American-International Pictures (AIP) and Universal hold a strong majority of these films.... for some reason they are severely lacking in releases on blu
wish we could see more of these flicks!!!

Thanks for the movies. I was kinda always a fan of fallout and then I started watching the twilight zone once I got prime and now I can't get enough I already have some of those titles but will check out some of the others. For some reason I almost prefer them in black and white I don't if anyone else is that way. But they really need to bring more of those older titles to blu ray.

The original 1956 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers is my favorite sci-fi film from that decade, with The Creature from the Black Lagoon coming in at a close second.

In addition to the great suggestions that others have listed above, I would also heartily recommend The Twilight Zone: The Complete Series, since the first season kicked off in 1959, and because many of the episodes are science fiction in nature and share the aesthetic of the 1950s sci-fi films.

They're also among the very best looking B&W blu-rays EVER!

I'm super disappointed I wasn't able to pick this up during the recent sale that blue moon had on amazon. I saw 2 different times of the day and tried to add it to my cart both times. Only to not let me add it. If anyone managed to get it and pick up multiple copies and wouldn't mind getting rid of one PM me

I really wish that Paramount (via Warner Home Video) would release The War of the Worlds...this is an absolute classic!!!! Why has this not been released yet on blu????? Come to think of it, Warner also needs to release the original The Thing (1951). So many scif classics that have sadly not been released on blu-ray

This is a great collection from a true master. I was lucky enough to pick it up brand new for around $13 at a Half Price Books sale.

Same here and I like the shades of film noir.

Next up for me would be The Day the Earth Stood Still (which is out on Blu), The Incredible Shrinking Man and Them! (which aren't)

This Island Earth would also be great to have in a version other than the snarky "Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie". Never understood why they had to pick on what was really quite a good movie and one of the few bigger budgeted science fiction films of the 50s.

I agree with you!

1) War of the Worlds
2) The Thing from Another World
3) The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms

I love black-and-white films and I really, really love black-and-white films on BD but there's a lot to be said for seeing 50s color classics (and not-so-classics) on BD.

I'd seen Forbidden Planet and The Blob a zillion times on tv over the years but it's not an exaggeration to say the BD releases are like seeing them for the first time all over again.

I'm really looking forward to George Pal's The Time Machine (1960) too.

+1. The original 1951 version of "The Thing" is my favorite movie from the '50's, with War of the Worlds (1953) a close second. My collection will not be complete until they are issued on blu. Another '50's flick I would like to see on BD is "Tarantula".
