Criterion The Brood (1979)

Quote:
New, restored 2K digital transfer, supervised by director David Cronenberg, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray
New documentary about the making of the film and Cronenberg’s early work, featuring actor Samantha Eggar, producer Pierre David, cinematographer Mark Irwin, assistant director John Board, and special makeup effects artists Rick Baker (Videodrome) and Joe Blasco (Shivers and Rabid)
New, restored 2K digital transfer of Crimes of the Future, a 1970 feature by Cronenberg, supervised by the director, plus a 2011 interview in which the director discusses his early films with Fangoria editor Chris Alexander
Interview from 2013 with actors Art Hindle and Cindy Hinds
Appearance by actor Oliver Reed on The Merv Griffin Show from 1980
Trailer and radio spot
PLUS: An essay by critic Carrie Rickey
Quote:

A disturbed woman is receiving a radical form of psychotherapy at a remote, mysterious institute. Meanwhile, her five-year-old daughter, under the care of her estranged husband, is being terrorized by a group of demonic beings. How these two story lines connect is the shocking and grotesque secret of this bloody tale of monstrous parenthood from David Cronenberg, starring Oliver Reed and Samantha Eggar. With its combination of psychological and body horror, The Brood laid the groundwork for many of the director’s films to come, but it stands on its own as a personal, singularly scary vision.

Quote:
Also Criterion-bound is Scanners (1981), David Cronenberg’s foray into the exploding head genre. Things blow up real good here and, along with the expected dollop of cool add-ons, there’s an early Cronenberg film called Stereo (1969) to check out. Down the road, creepy little critters terrorize experimental psychiatrist Oliver Reed in Criterion’s edition of The Brood (1979), an offering from Canada’s always-disturbing filmmaker that may be his creepiest effort ever…And keeping with horror, Criterion has a treat up its sleeve for Halloween with the arrival of The Innocents (1961). This adaptation of Henry James’ “The Turn of the Screw” is a gothic spooker, with Deborah Kerr as a new governess encountering unnatural circumstances at a country estate. Expect premium extras on this one.
This guys obviously must have some insight on the Criterion slate as the article also states that The Innocents is coming from Criterion this Halloween.

Nice. I've considered importing it a few times, but I think I'll wait. I so wish Criterion would put out a Cronenberg boxset with all these releases (Videodrome, Naked Lunch, Scanners, Brood) and some new stuff.

Nice to see it confirmed.

It's been on their Hulu channel for a while, so it seemed like only a matter of time. My favorite Cronenberg.

We've known that Criterion has had The Brood Since last Spring/Summer as a bunch of us were hoping for a Halloween 2013 release. Scanners was just announced during the last batch of announcements finally, and while The Brood seems a given for the Fall, I'm not going to Hold my breath as Criterion has had it this long, so who knows when they plan to drop it.

On another note, I'd Love to see Naked lunch as well!

The Brood is inevitable since it went up on their iTunes store a while back and now with Scanners on its way, we will see The Brood. The only question is when.

I am very interested in The Innocents, it's one of the few major classic horror movies I still haven't seen. I'd been contemplating buying the current release, but now I have a reason to procrastinate even further!

Wow, The Brood AND The Innocents! I've been waiting to see The Brood for years. What better way than a Criterion release?

Coool, The Brood is a classic late-70s horror film. I hope the packaging is consistent in height and depth as a standard case.

Criterion are going to have to work miracles if their Blu-ray Disc of The Innocents is to top the BFI release.

It's one of my Top 10, so usually I'd double dip in a heartbeat at the chance of even a slight improvement, but the UK release is so very good I'm struggling to imagine what 'better' would be.

Well, some of their packaging, as cool as it is, like Godzilla, is oversized and does not sit within the other blurays well. Others like Rosemary's Baby, Blow Out, and Videodrome sit perfectly with my collection.

Have you not seen the digipaks? They're coming out with more and more of them now that they've started doing combo packs. So if there are three discs, it'll be a damage-prone digipak.

Does anyone here own the Japanese BD of The Brood? I was wondering if the HD presentation was similar to that of the UK release.

I do see that the audio tracks are different on the various BD's. Both the UK and the AU discs are listed as having a 2.0 track, (LPCM 2.0 on the UK and DTS-HD 2.0 on the AU) while the Japanese disc has a LPCM 5.1 track.

Thanks for the help in advance.

The Brood is my favourite Cronenberg film and one of my favourite horror films ever. I've got the UK release which looks very good. Not sure I'll get The Criterion, though if there are good special features it would be tempting.

Is the Uk release region free?
