Default I no longer buy Blu-ray movies :(

With the purchase of our new home, comes a new budget.... I guess Blu-Rays is a small price to pay for a much larger home, in a better school district. Netflix will be my best friend I guess.... My wife doesn't have a problem with me buying movies I really want, once they're on sale, for much less, but my days of pre-orders are coming to an end.... I've been told that There Will Be Blood, if I order "There Will Be Blood" (I had to cancel the pre-order she didn't know about!!!) I'm sure I'll pick up a title here or there... but buying everything I want up-front has become a distant memory

She is still open to me buying a new projector, and completing the "Theater" in our home... so at least I'll have a nice place to watch the films I get from Netflix. I guess my wife doesn't see the need for me to actually OWN the movies..... argghhhh she just doesn't get it..... Wait until Netflix ships us "There Will Be Blood" for the 4th time

EDIT:

I guess it's good that I upgraded my audio before we bought this house too... otherwise I'd be stuck for awhile!

If you eat out, go out once less time per week . . . that's a movie or two right there

Sorry man, thats a good reason to stop buying though. Guess it will make birthdays, amazon bogos, and various gift giving holidays all the more special??

We're bothing making sacrifices..... I could still buy movies, and she could still go shopping etc... too, but we have college funds to think about etc....

We're not really getting in over our heads either (otherwise we wouldn't do it) but we want to be able to absorb the new mortgage and still set-aside the savings we have been setting aside.

Besides, although I do pretty well, my wife makes a lot more money than I do (she's a Physician) and she has always been more frugal than myself, so I recognize the need to cut back! We've cut back on the fancy dinners already, and have been doing a lot of cooking at home, and I run home for lunch now also (I'm 3 miles from work, and the new house will still be under 4 miles away) so that all saves a LOT of money. We've cut out the weekly Sushi night, and never order pizza etc.

We started a "hypothetical" budget to say, "IF" our mortgage were ****, and we put the additional money in an account.... well... our new mortgage was in the range we were looking for, so we know we're fine, but like I said... we want to be able to provide for our children, and do a LOT of upgrades to the house also, so we want to cut back on all "luxury" spending, until we are in the new house for 6 months or so.

You never want to be strapped for cash, because that puts a strain on the relationship also.... and we don't want that.

Yeah. Too bad I didn't smoke, then I could just say "hey, I'll quit smoking" it'd be easier than quitting Blu-Ray

Beta, good man for being responsible

Look at it this way, the discs you don't HAVE to have will likely be cheaper when you come out the other end

Those damn kids, man. Always keepin' a brother down I can't imagine how my life will change when we finally go down that road. That's cool though. At the end of the day it seems like you've got your priorities straight.

I edited my original post before you replied, I thought it might have been a bit too personal. Anyway . . . you could always pick up a disc here or there, you know, "for the kids."

Come home with a copy of Rambo. "Oh, I thought the kids would like it."

No doubt - the kids'll love those Pixar ones.
(at least if you pay them $5 they will!)

My heartfelt condolensces.

I remember my sacrifice when we bought our first house - had to sell my jet black numbered '96 Camaro SS. Sadness.

Glad I don't live in the Michigan Netflix district. They have to send a movie 4 times?! In 10 years of being a Netflix customer, I have never had any lost being sent to me, 1 broken disk, and only 5-6 too scratched to play. Detroit must be declaring war on your Netflix discs.

are you saying that those who spend on BD are irresponsible?

I also just purchased my first home, (and thus all the upgrades of TV, BD, etc etc).

But I am still making my payments just fine~~

Sad to see you go, Beta Man~ You'll be back soon~ :P

No worries amigo.

Consider it that you're just stopping paying the early adopter tax and you're waiting {like myself} until the prices come down to a more reasonable level.

My movies are shipped from a Suburb of Cleveland (where I live) and it's not because there are problems with the discs, but I just want to keep re-watching it (saw it the first few times on standard DVD, so I put the Blu version on the way now, since I canceled the pre-order)

Honestly.... with netflix, it makes "renting" affordable... before, when I was buying DVDs (1,100 or so) I was buying because it was cheaper (over time) than renting !!!! I'll still buy once the prices come down, and more titles are available... I just find myself buying titles like ID4, which I already had on DVD, and it wasn't one of my favorite movies.... I just felt the need to buy up everything good that came out, even if they were movies I bought on DVD AFTER they hit the bargain bins!

Here's an idea, I'm not sure if Blockbuster does this in the States though.

Trade in all the titles on DVD that you want on Blu-Ray that are already out {or due to come out soon} trading in will save you a bit of cash up and you'll be able to buy some of the new stuff as it comes out.

It's not the perfect solution but it'll help you out.

why did you buy bigger house? when you could of bought medium size

besides blu-ray movies are not that expensive even if you bought one a month or 2

It's the American-Capitalist-Consumer-Pig in me..... gotta have the big house I guess. Besides, the "wife factor" always comes into play.... I would be content staying in the house we're in, which is more than big enough for our current family-unit.....

The other problem... I was buying WAY MORE than one or two a month

It's a compromise.... like I said... we're both trying to cut back on things that aren't really necessary.

NEVER! I have many movies that either won't ever come out on Blu-Ray, or aren't really worth upgrading.....

Blu Ray is better, I know this.... but If I sold off all of my DVDs, I'd go NUTS waiting for them to be released on Blu !!!!
