Here's to hoping it's a StudioCanal Collection title! Ain't had one of those since The Servant last year.

Alas, it won't be a StudioCanal Collection title. According to MovieMail they've discontinued the series. Check the relevant thread for more of this upsetting news.

Here's our review for the French release from Canal. I would assume that the UK release is similar as the disc has region menus (United Kingdom, France, Germany) and is distributed by Canal in all three territories.

It's showing at my local arthouse this week. Sadly the times aren't really convenient. Which is a shame, as I've never seen it. I look forward to the BD though. I haven't pre-ordered, I'll check out HMV and Fopp, and hope it isn't a £20-ish job.

Pretty inexpensive from Zavvi if you do decide to pre-order (might be the same price on release week). StudioCanal titles can often get pricy after initial release so I'd recommend deciding now!

I watched my U.K. release and what I seen matched the caps for the french release.
Also watched the 14 minute Restoration featurette which was very informative explaining the condition of this film. Original negative no longer exist so they used a combination of different elements including a Brown Nitrate. They also explained that mold had started to accumulate and needed to be treated but but not so much in a way that it would severely effect the middle images of the frames. And throughout the film it was easy to see the quality shift. It reminded me a lot of Sony/Criterions It Happened One Night. |

Sorry to ressurect an old thread... A lovely film. I bought the blu-ray based on the review here that praised it. I have to say, however, that I am quite disappointed with the restoration on display.
Watching it, I felt there was something weird about it and the restoration featurette unfortunately confirms my suspicion. While the grading is excellent to my eye, too much DNR has been applied. It looks acceptable on the screenshots below and some might prefer it (as the technician who says that the second gen. source was "too grainy"), even in spite of the fact that it obviously removes detail/sharpness and makes the image blurry in comparison to the fresh scan. And I would be willing to swallow it as a "move" towards the original negative, which would likely be less grainy. It is in motion, however, where it all falls apart. With whatever they applied, the grain tends to group into chunks that move separately around the image and it looks very unnatural. Organic quality of the image gone. (It also seems to me that it makes the inherent instability of the source stand out, but this is secondary.) And the thing simply becomes ugly. I don't understand how the reviewer missed this... The restoration technician says that the "extensive" grain is okay on a "large screen" and the clean-up was done on the untouched scan. Did anybody by any chance see a DCP of this? While unlikely, is there any chance that the Spanish blu-ray does not have the grain reduction applied? ![]() ![]() ![]() |
