I rarely do it personally
but I have to say that the idea of returning home and finding new episodes of my favorite shows waiting for me on my apple tv, in HD, sounds like the most convenient thing ever there are setbacks, though like, the price.. they're usually from $50 - $30, might not sound like much for 1 show but if I'm getting multiple passes.. specially that I usually get the shows on blu ray too, for better quality and collecting purposes (itunes' HD is 720p) I really wish apple would bring back tv shows rental ![]() ![]() |

I do it. I only buy walking dead and Mad Men. So at $30 for a season- or $60/year, it allows me to cut cable and not have to pirate those shows and save about $600 in the process. So it depends on how much TV you watch, like you mentioned. The other show I watch is Game of Thrones, which I use my parent's log-in information for on my Apple TVs.

I agree- the reason I buy Mad Men/Walking dead is that AMC shows come out same day. If HBO was the same- I'd buy them. But they release digitally the same as Blu-Ray, and because of that- buy the Blu, use the iTunes code, Sell the flixster & vudu codes- and come out way ahead with Blus to boot. Or, simply buy the iTunes code for $7 or so off the trading if you don't care about the Blu

Generally only when I can pickup codes on the forum on the cheap otherwise I buy BLUs/DVDs.
I have no monthly cable TV bill (cancelled DirecTV years ago) so BLUS, DVDs, iTunes & Netflix by Mail is my primary source of Movies/TV. Last edited by AZBrowncoat; 05-28-2014 at 01:00 AM. |

I actually prefer buying TV shows on iTunes over discs, for the simple reason that I can watch them on the iPad when traveling (best way to pass the time on long-distance flights). The image quality of TV shows is not as important to me as for movies, so the iTunes 1080p is more than good enough. Exception: I also buy select HBO shows on BD (e.g. Game of Thrones), since they are often less expensive and include iTunes DCs too.
Also, there are quite a few shows available in HD on iTunes that have not been released on BD (e.g. Veronica Mars). As for the price, keep an eye out for discounted iTunes gift cards on sites like Slickdeals. 20% off offers usually come around every few months. |

I buy Season Passes (from the US iTunes Store) because I'm in the UK and we regularly get screwed when it comes to getting the latest US shows on our broadcast channels (Game of Thrones is a slight exception). For instance, I got The Good Wife and The Big Bang Theory and was therefore able to watch the day after the US, rather than wait the 3+ months for UK TV to bother airing them. Plus, The Good Wife isn't available on blu so it's the only way to buy it in HD. These shows have higher prices, but usually about mid-season iTunes discounts them, so it could be worth your while to buy per-episode and then 'complete your season' at the discounted price mid-season (being careful to make sure you don't buy too many per-episode and therefore being unable to complete your season). Previously I've done Walking Dead and Mad Men, but we get those shows within a few days now, which isn't so bad.
Then there are those like Halt and Catch Fire which there's no UK broadcast date, so I picked up the Season Pass for that - and even worse, those such as the third season of Once Upon a Time which were 'cancelled' over here (i.e., local broadcasters broadcast Seasons 1 and 2, but dropped it after 2). There's currently no legal way to watch Once Upon a Time in the UK even though the entire season has aired in the US - utter madness. Of course, it's almost certainly a violation of the T&C of iTunes for me to use the US store, but the choices available to me are that or piracy, so I don't care about breaking stupid terms. (It's not illegal for me to use the US store, just bending/breaking Apple's T&C.) |

Exactly! I guess the viewing figures weren't good enough... But it annoys me that Disney/Buena Vista/abc (whoever holds the rights over here) hasn't even released it on, say, the UK iTunes. Maybe they assumed one TV channel would pick it up - sadly, they were wrong...
On the plus side, we have recently been getting Castle on the UK iTunes Store the same time as it appears on the US store - wish more shows would do that! |

I do, but now I wait until they go on sale because almost every TV show goes on sale every now and then, and they're at great prices when they do. But what I'll do is buy a TV Season Pass (when on sale), then watch them via iTunes in the Cloud until the season pass is done, then download the videos from it.

Yes.
I buy iTunes TV seasons when they're not available on DVD or Blu-ray. Same for movies. |

Even if a show was available only on DVD (like Pretty Little Liars), I'd buy it on iTunes because it's in really nice looking high definition, whereas I have a hard time with DVDs on 108".
I never buy movies digitally. There's always a Blu-ray out somewhere. If not, there's Netflix. And if it isn't streamed ANYWHERE, I guess I could give it a rent on iTunes. I've done that a few times. |
