Default Must-see NZ places?

Hello members from New Zealand.

I'll be taking a trip to NZ in October and will be staying in Auckland. I really am not sure what there is to do there though. Would anyone here be able to recommend affordable and worthy places of visiting while I'm there?

You could go to Hobbiton? Kind of pricey, but I had a good time http://www.hobbitontours.com/

Get the ferry to the Coromandel. Best beaches in NZ and some great walking tracks

I'll be in NZ for a week from October 1st. I don't think we will have access to a car so I'll probably be using public transport.

If you don't have a car, go and check out Waiheke Island, at least.

…and climb Rangitoto.

Everywhere. NZ is a spectacular and underrated country, which for too long lived in the shadow of an often overrated Australia. I had one week to explore the South and North Island and found myself not being able to fit in everywhere I wanted to go.

Definitely check out Waitomo Caves and Tongairio National Park. They were two of my favourite places.

^ The South Island is the real place to go. I've only been down there once (but stayed for 2 years), and just driving from Picton down to Invercargil was pretty awesome.. the landscape is beautiful.

If you're Auckland constrained and want someone to have a beer with, let me know. I think you might be here for the NZIFF or maybe even the 24 hour movie marathon!
