Maybe I'm getting worried too soon. But within the last year I bought a really nice 65" DLP HDTV, a blu-ray player and a bunch of blu-ray movies and love the quality of it all.
But now I'm hearing things about 1440p resolution coming out this year. Is this seriously going to make all the HDTV's, blu-ray players and blu-ray movies obsolete? Are they coming out with a new format with movies in 1440p resolution? This is seriously bothering me after all the money I've spent on high definition items. Any feedback is appreciated. Mike |

Thanks guys, that's kinda what I wanted to hear. I'll still be upset if all this stuff we've all purchased is obsolete in another year or two. It was 10 years between DVD and blu-ray which is okay but three short years between blu-ray and some new format would be ridiculous.
But anyway, thanks for the input so far, I appreciate it. Mike |

There will always be something better on the horizon. It's just a matte of time and how much the consumer is willing to spend. Blu-ray is taking 'baby steps' with the average consumers, so it will be a while before we find something else that will take blu-rays place.

I would much rather see them bring out MPEG4 1080p/60 for fast action sports then try to push more pixels. 1080p/60 is an improvement I can enjoy right now with the stuff I have.

At nearly the same time DVD came out, 720p and 1080i HD transmissions began. DVD looked dirty and forever out of focus next to the early digital broadcast loops. SONY was working on a high deff replacement since day one of DVD. However, thanks to anamorphic DVD, it gave us lots of content and a reason to own a 16:9 TV. The few minutes of true HD programming available at the time was not a compelling reasion to get a new set. DVD paved the way for something better that we knew was already in the wings..

That 1440p will upconvert! 1080p stuff just like your 1080p display upconverts 480i/p and 720p stuff. That guy who has the 6 million dollar home theater with a 4k projector upconverts measely 1080p high definition sources as well

there is no need for 1440p, and by the reasoning i am going to employ here there is no need for for most people to have 1080p either.
Maximum def desired display = maximum def source. that's it. IF you have a blu-ray player/PS3/appropriate PC THEN, and only then, should you require a 1080p set. exactly 0% of broadcast HD is 1080p, so for the majority of HD users (who still don't have BD players) there is no need for 1080p. 100% of broadcast HD is 1080i/720p (roughly 90% 1080i : 10% 720p), though roughly 10% of broadcast in a BEST CASE scenario is HD, period. due to bandwidth requirements of 1080p there will be little (i'm betting none) 1080p content in traditional broacast (ant/cable/sat) for the next 5+ years, probably 10. Review: who "needs" 1080p? the user with a 1080p source, or one who will acquire a 1080p source in the near future. who "needs" 1440p? no one. unless you have a 1440p out putting computer and compatible transmition medium you would be wasting money on the display and time on worrying. If you still insist on it then you have far too much disposable income and i have a 133700p display to sell you as well, comes with a free bridge (in brooklyn too; location location location!), and is tax deductible ![]() ![]() |

Thanks guys, I really appreciate all the advice.
I'm not losing sleep over this or anything lol...but 1440p was something that I noticed and figured I'd ask you guys about it. Thanks for all the input and healthy discussion. Mike P.S.: Can't wait for Signs, There Will Be Blood and Cloverfield tomorrow ![]() |
