I'd buy it only if it contained the original cut released in Mexican theaters before Harvey took his scissors to it.

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on Blu-ray Alfonso Arau's award winning film Like Water for Chocolate a.k.a. Como agua para chocolate (1992), starring Marco Leonardi, Lumi Cavazos, Regina Torné, and Yareli Arizmendi. The release will be available for purchase on August 19th.

Based on the best-selling novel by Laura Esquivel, Like Water For Chocolate was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film (Mexico) at the 1993 Golden Globes.

Synopsis: Experience for yourself the erotic tale of forbidden love that seduced both critics and audiences worldwide! Tita and Pedro are passionately in love. But their love is forbidden by an ancient family tradition. To be near Tita, Pedro marries her sister. As the family cook, Tita expresses her passion for Pedro through preparing delectable dishes. Now, in Tita's kitchen, ordinary spices become a recipe for passion. Her creations bring on tears of longing, heated desire or chronic-pain - while they wait for the moment to fulfill their most hidden pleasures.

Special Features:

Audio Commentary with Alfonso Arau, Lumi Cavazos and Marco Leonard

It looks like the last reply on this thread was a few years ago. Has anyone heard any news since of the original uncut version being released in any Blu-ray edition, or due to be released? There doesn't appear to be anything listed on this site. It seems unlikely it will appear, but we can always hope!

For what it's worth, my wife and I just watched the edited Lionsgate edition on Blu-ray, and it looks fantastic.

The longer edition doesn't seem to exist in blu-ray anywhere - not even Spain or Mexico.

However, having once watched it back in the day, I really don't think it's a better version of the film. In fact, it seems a little too long, diluting the more enjoyable elements that are still there in the shorter version.

Thanks, BluBonnet. That's good to know. I read somewhere that even the director supposedly liked the edited version better, or at least said so--whether in earnest or for other reasons, who knows? I was curious if maybe the longer version had more food scenes in it. I haven't read the book, but my wife has, and she remembers more lingering on the cooking aspect of the story in the book than in the film. It's still a great film even edited as it is. I'm quite happy with it and the treatment Lionsgate gave it.

I don't exactly remember what was in the scenes that were deleted, but it wasn't anything particularly memorable. Mainly I remember that the longer version felt a little too indulgent, and it just seemed to drag on a lot in places. And it really didn't add anything to the core of the story... the fact that it isn't being released even in Spanish-speaking territories really does suggest that even the biggest fans don't think it needed to be quite that long.

I just saw this on the release schedule and when I looked at the description for the movie, I couldn't help but notice that the movie plot bears a very striking resemblance to "Simply Irresistible". That rom-com with Sarah Michelle Geller and Sean Patrick Flannery that came out in the late 90's. People who eat her food fall in love after eating it. It was somewhat contrite but it was a tearjerker. I love a good old fashioned rom-com, like Sweet Home Alabama, New Girl in Town, She's All That, How to Lose a Guy in 10 days.

Ok, I can't find a good copy of this bluray!! I tried BM, had to exchange it then we (me and the store) gave up trying to find a good copy, then yesterday I tried Orbit thinking maybe they have a different batch and I asked them to open it before sending it to me and nope same thing there too. There is a weird "bubble" on the outer edge of the disk and it's on all the copies I've tried, the first one it played fine until the last 3-5 freaking mins of the movie (thankfully I wasn't really watching it, watching it, just slow fast forwarding to make sure it worked after seeing the damage on the disk, it would have been frustrating to get that far for it to just stop playing)!! The second wouldn't even load in either player and the one from Orbit has it too, so we took it off my order. I'm hoping with all these defects they'll re-press the disk, but I have no clue how to find out, and how to make sure I get a good new copy if they do. But now I'm too nervous to try to find a used copy thinking it'll be a crap shoot with what I get. No stores have it used so I can't ask them to check their disks.

I have only seen this movie once (aside from testing the BD) and that was in the theater, a group of friends went and it was one of those weird experiences as a teen seeing teachers (two of them with their wives) out in public at the same showing! They were impressed we were out watching that movie though! haha So I really want to watch it again.
