Germany Bakshi's Coonskin

Just received this for review. I can confirm that the packaging states Region ABC and it plays fine in my A set-top. My drive is having issues so I can't fully confirm Region Free but I imagine it is.

Update is pending in the database but audio is DTS-HD MA 2.0 English and German, with optional German subs. Extras are two trailers, German and US. Pre-menu trailers also functioned no problem. Disc has a glossy slip and the art is reversible with a FSK-logo-free side. At a glance, PQ seems fine but it's hard to tell how much of an improvement over the remastered DVD it is; will have to borrow that from my friend and do some comparisons.

Any chance for a few screen captures?

PS: here is the amazon.de link:

Had no idea this was coming out, and, of course, I just completed an Amazon.de order last week.

Turns out this disc has a new form of copy protection not yet broken by MakeMKV and so I cannot make caps. Sorry. I will let you know if this changes.

I saw the BD last weekend and to me the transfer looked fine. I am not an expert and do not have hi-end equipment, but the image showed only very little dirt, strong colors and much grain which to me did not apper to be unnatural or filtered in any exaggerated fashion.

If you have VLC media player on your PC, you can make screen captures just by watching the movie. The option will be at the very bottom of the VIDEO option in the tool bar section (it will say TAKE SNAPSHOT and deposit a PNG image in your MY PICTURES folder under your computer profile).

It's giving me this message.

EDIT: I successfully got my VLC to read Blu-Ray discs, but it still has some sort of problem playing them. Coonskin isn't actually loading on my computer at all, so I'd have to do this somewhere else, but I tested it with a different Blu-Ray. It displayed an image that must have come off the disc, a still, and listed the film's running time, but no video actually played.

I received this today. I've been looking forward to it for some time. It's a 2K transfer off of Paramount's negative. The film element is pristine. Also, the film carries the original title, "Coonskin", not "Streetfight", so it is probably the original premiere version without the little cuts in the Streetfight version.

This is definitely the best the film has ever looked and it gives a film-like impression, not the grain smoothed slickness of other animated films on blu-ray. Well worth ordering. I think it's Bakshi's best movie.

I agree. I compared it to a friend's copy of the Xenon US DVD and the Blu-Ray is hands down a better-looking transfer. The DVD has heavy artifacting and occasional aliasing caused by the grain, whereas the Blu-Ray looks nice and film-like. Any increase in detail or depth is minimal to non-existent, but it is still a significant improvement on the compression end of things and worth the upgrade if you like the movie.

Wow, it's off the neg? Glad to hear it!

I second the request for screen grabs!

Screen grabs won't tell you that much. A lot of this film is found footage shot on 16mm used as backplates. As the poster above says, it's the way the grain in motion works that makes this transfer good, not sharpness of image.

I got a chance to see it recently and it is indeed a really nice transfer with terrific texture. Great looking colors in the animated scenes.
