This is one of those films where the character in question was allegedly a lot nastier in real life but the film is done so well it works. If only this release didn't cost $30+.

Came in here to chime in with exactly this. May be a great film, but don't watch this movie expecting anything close to an accurate depiction of Stroud, who in reality was a real piece of work.

Plus he was barred from keeping birds when he was transferred to Alcatraz, since he just let them shit all over the place.

Same for me as well, I remember watching "Inherit the Wind" back in High School... many a moon ago... can't wait to add both films to my collection, both are excellent, even of the events in both are slightly and/or majorly exaggerated.

You are 100% right about both films events being exaggerated, and I think they both take criticism unjustly because people want to view them as 'factual biopics' rather than what they are: Stories based on headlines of the day that make great vehicles to make a point about freedoms and rights etc.
