Default Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) from Aniplex Japan (Oct. 29, 2014)

This series is getting released from Aniplex in Japan. Official site:

http://www.hagaren.jp/1st/bluray_disc_box/

My question is: Is there any chance Aniplex could release this in the US as well like they've done with other Japanese sets? Or would there be a rights conflict with Funimation?

I would love to have this series on Blu even if it's an overpriced Aniplex set.

Was this show animated in HD originally, or would this be an upscale, I wonder?

Upscale. Studio Bones didn't start producing their shows in HD until Jyu-Oh-Sei in 2006.

Aniplex USA sucks, after the initial stock is sold, they don't restock. At least FUNimation would do a restock.

Thanks for that interesting info, I'm a noob when it comes to that specific stuff.

I thought this was pretty much eclipsed by Brotherhood anyway

I'm probably in the minority here, but I prefer the original to Brotherhood. For me, the original just has a tighter story mainly focused on the two brothers, which I feel worked very well for an anime series. I felt Brotherhood just had too many characters and too many plotlines to cover. It just felt very chaotic to me.

In addition, I feel the original has an overall darker tone. Brotherhood struck me as being a bit more for kids. Take for example the moments when their teacher vomits blood. This is very disturbing in the original but is treated as comedy in Brotherhood.

I own the first season on DVD and was going to get the second soon or when it's on sale for a good price, but if this comes stateside at a good price (Funimation, as Aniplex USA is sure to charge top dollar), I'll go Blu-ray. For an upscale, I won't mind the DVDs that are already out. Thanks for heads up though, OP.

I wouldn't say for kids but at least the teen range which this series is aiming too. I like the first series it has a special place in my heart but the brotherhood story is far superior and hiromu arakawa to be able to take as many characters as in brotherhood and finish the series neatly as it did,Deserves admiration.

The original had an unsatisfactory ending.

Well the ending to the original Fullmetal Alchemist series seems to me that the Conqueror of Shamballa movie is its ending.

the original FMA kills brotherhood in regards to opening themes. "Rewrite" by Asian Kung-Fu Generation especially.

That's because they took a 26vol Manga serial and crammed it into 63-64eps (forget the number now!) which is an insanely low amount of episodes for that much manga material (63eps of anime usually translate to about 12-15vols of manga for a standard Shounen action manga). It's great that they took the time to adapt the manga for the fans given that the original anime series was such a huge success in Japan and abroad (in fact I think it was even more popular in Japan than the manga and subsequently brotherhood itself!) but it really does grate that they chose to half-arse the show by not giving it the room to breathe. Everything is at breakneck pace in Brotherhood and that does get tiresome.

They rush the beginning especially but after I say like ep 14,everything goes back to a regular pace supposedly they did this due to fans of the first series and non manga readers not get confused thinking they just remade the first series with new animation lol.

The movie wouldn't have had to be made, if the series ended better.
