Here's my short review that I posted for my friends on Facebook...
Stephen King's new novel, Mr. Mercedes, is a departure from the author's supernatural horror stories, and it focuses instead on the real monsters that walk among us. In a city besieged by recession in 2009, a killer in a stolen Mercedes plows through a crowd of people at a job fair, leaving several victims dead and wounded. Months later, a retired police detective who is haunted by the unsolved case receives a letter from "Mr. Mercedes", and becomes embroiled in a cat-and-mouse game with the killer. The title character is one of the writer's scariest creations in recent memory, especially because he conjures comparisons to the Boston Marathon bombers and to several present-day perpetrators of random violence. Mr. Mercedes is a horrific, but fun homage to hard-boiled detective fiction, and one can sense Stephen King tipping a fedora to authors like James M. Cain (to whom the novel is dedicated), Raymond Chandler, and Dashiell Hammett. Highly recommended! The book is a lot of fun. It seems particularly well-suited to a screen adaptation, even by the standards of King's most screen-worthy books in the past. |

I seem to recall Shout! Factory saying they weren't releasing any more Universal transfers due to the negative feedback their Cat People and Darkman releases received, which should tell you all you need to know about the state of the transfers for this and People Under the Stairs. I won't even think of buying either of them until I've read some reviews.

Was there a direct quote on the second half of that statement? It's not an unreasonable assumption, but I don't remember reading anything specific from Scream themselves. Most of their Universal releases were criticized to varying degrees for the transfers, so why would those two in particular be the tipping point?
