Default The First Power (1990) - Fall 2014 (Scorpion/Kino)

Thought I'd start a thread incase people missed it in the Kino Lorber Studio Classics one.

Big fan of this one. Great villain role for the underrated Jeff Kober. Another old MGM horror DVD in need of an upgrade to cross off the list...

I think the last time I saw this was back in '98 on cable. I think. It's been such a long time yet I saw this movie a ton back when it was in theaters back in the day. In my neighborhood there was a dollar theater called The Yeadon theater and this must've played there for months on end. Heck, I may have to get this just for the nostalgia.

Didn't enjoy this one when I first saw it in a theater double billed another film. Ironically I remember this film more than the one I paid to watch . This one's an odd acquisition from Kino. It's more on the level of Shout acquiring Eve of Destruction - not quite sure why they acquired it since the film is rather bland and wasn't on anybody's wishlist. First Power is like a version of Angel Heart, only much sillier. Wasn't there anything better Kino could've acquired?

I absolutely love this movie! I remember picking up a VHS copy from a closing video store many years ago and was surprised at just how much I enjoyed it. This is a definite purchase for me.

You're familiar with everyone's wishlist then? Seems like a few want it, judging by the responses here and on Scorpion's Facebook.

I remember Tracy Griffith being pretty easy on the eyes as I had a huge thing for redheads back when I saw this one in the theaters in 1990. The movie, no, I don't really recall much except it was a pretty standard thriller with a supernatural twist. If the price is right, I may take the plunge.

Don't need to be. Before this announcement nobody had even mentioned the film.

I had, several times in the Scream Factory thread. Others had as well. Then there's this:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ht=first+power

So yeah, people have mentioned it before.

I actually started a thread for it in the "Wish Lists" sub-forum a year or so ago.

I second that Tracy Griffith was easy on the eyes but am stunned -- and don't understand why -- someone selected it for Blu-Ray when there are so many better titles in the MGM vaults that also have substantially more fan support. And I agree also that Eve of Destruction came to mind...another poorly received flop from the same era (from the same company, no less). It's a very pedestrian and forgettable film with little going for it (I only saw it once on VHS), and was almost universally hated by critics and most people who saw it (the few who did).

It's just baffling. They have a whole vault of MGM titles and THIS is one of the first titles they choose? Like Eve of Destruction, this is one of those "huh?" type of announcements that isn't going to sell (and then they'll come back years from now bemoaning that nobody bought it). Certainly doesn't belong in a "CLASSICS" line of releases lol.

Can't wait! I absolutely love this film! DVD is OOP and has been for years. This might not be an expected announcement but it's definitely welcome, as far as I'm concerned.

I remember being pleasantly suprised by this when I saw it in the theatre. I'll definitely pick this up at some point.

I remember enjoying this on VHS back in the day, but I was sixteen at the time, so it's probably crap in retrospect.

Saw this in theaters as a kid and thought it was quite good.

I really like this movie and should be nice to see on BD with new extras and all.
