Default Do you think we'll ever see a 4K restoration for RoboCop 2?

I loved the restoration they did with the first RoboCop, but I just think they should do something similar with RoboCop 2, which is a proper Peter Weller's RoboCop movie and a classic in its own right.

What do you think?

Nope, not popular enough. I like the movie, but most other people don't and I don't think the studios would want to dump much more money into its Blu-Ray release than they already have.

The current available transfer looks really good too. There won't be near enough outcry for a new one.

It appears to me that Fox is just rolling through their top-selling MGM titles and giving them 4K transfers in an attempt to double dip. Since the transfers have largely represented real upgrades and the release prices have been very reasonable, it's been worth it, at least for me, to buy Fargo, Rocky and especially Terminator again (waited on Robocop so I was buying that for the first time).

I love the Robocop movies but wouldn't likely buy another Robo 2 for such a minor visual upgrade as what Rocky got, for example.

No we won't

Robo 2 actually does look stunning as is, so theres really no need for it.

What Robocop 2 needs is a real special edition. The current transfer looks fine IMO

I agree...the current transfer looks awesome. The problem is the movie is awful. Im watching it right now and can't believe how bad it is. Thankfully I only paid $13 for the trilogy.

Yeah, if they were going to do 4K remasters of the RoboCop sequels, I think they would've done them already to coincide with the 2014 movie's release. 2 and 3 seem to have good reviews on the current discs, though. I haven't seen them yet for myself.

have you seen '3' - that's far worse. 2 is fun because it's just as mean and nihilistic as the first film. (and there's a higher body count) AND it has the better 'louder' sound mix.

I saw a little bit of 3 back when it came out and I remember it being really bad. The violence is good in 2 but the acting is really bad.

3 is a total joke! We all thought it was a massive joke on release and its even worse now. Watch it again! I dare you to watch it! I watched it again last year for the first time in about 20 years - god I wish I hadnt. Its just so bad. It is funny in places though - unintentionally funny. The japanese 'robots' pull the strangest faces you have ever seen. See how a little girl can disable ED-209 by plugging in a toy laptop!

2 is no classic like the first one but its still a good (rather humour-less) action film. And the PQ is pretty good in my opinion. Strangely enough though, 3 has even better PQ..

When you hear folks talk about a "Franchise Killer", they're usually talking about Ghostbusters II, because nobody ever remembers Robocop 2.
(I don't remember the plot, I just remember the Gong Show acts making cameos.)

As for 3, the producers confessed they didn't even want to do it after 2 dropped the ball down the sewer, but the Asian market insisted. The enthusiasm shows.

I've always liked Robo 3. It's not a great movie by any stretch and the fx are horrible. Still it has it's Frank Miller quirks, and it's take on using mercenaries for urban gentrification without state or local government to broke and unorganized to do anything about it has a ring of comedy and truth to the proceedings. It also has one of the best supporting cast ever for what is essentially a B movie. Still, I wouldn't buy it unless it was $5 or less.

From all reports the quality on it is pretty solid and I can tell you Robo 2 is one of my alltime faves and I've watched the BD about 5 times already. The PQ on 2 is exceptional. Truth be be told it wouldn't surprise me if it's a 4k scan. The level of detail on the revised Robocop armor in 2 is exceptional.

If you can buy it in a single disc edition go for it. If not pick up the trilogy pack. I saw it at Costco for $19.96. Good deal really as it does come with the new Robo 1 remaster.

Thank you for this feedback.

By the way, "RoboCop 2" is a great sci-fi action movie. Surely it's not as bleak or poignant as the first one, but still a great movie in its own right.

VERY unlikely, the current transfer is fine for a film of it stature anyways.

The idea for Robocop 3 is a good one as you said, it was just not executed very well. I too like the idea of Robocop fighting urban passification. It is a logical way for the story to progress from the first two films. The scene at the end where
[Show spoiler]the police chief deputizes the citizens of the neighborhood who are defending their homes gets me every time- it is a very moving scene for me.

Robocop 2's transfer is incredible, as is Robocop 3's. In some ways, 3 is even better than 2 PQ wise. I too would not be shocked if they were both 4K transfers.

My guess is that it will eventually happen when the costs to do so decrease. Remember back in the early days of HD and BD where everyone questioned if X movie would get new scans and actually get released on the format?

I doubt it. And this is why 4k will never become more than a niche format, like laserdisc. Other than the big titles, it just won't be worth it for studios to spend the money creating new 4k transfers. Most studios can't even bother to do a new 2k transfer for their catalog titles, let alone 4k.
