Has anybody realised how expensive projectors are?
You get what you pay for, but a decent projector will set you back $1,500. Thats EXPENSIVE! I want a projector for my PS3, but I dont have the money! No matter how bad you think your projector is, at least you have one (hehe) Anyway, if you think they are too expensive or know where to get a cheap one, PLEASE TELL ME! Thanks! |

Actually I think they're cheap. But that's cos I remember the old 4:3 standard def with low brightness, low contrast, really CRAPPY old big dinosaur projectors being $5k-10k? And once you trucked it in, you would have to align the three tubes. Now look what you get! For less $ too

Agreed. $1500 for a decent budget-minded projector is dirt cheap. Especially when considering you can get a 70" to 100" viewable screen out of it that's relatively crystal clear. For larger screen sizes, and given the right room dynamics, a projector hands down provides the most cost-effective solution to big screen HD viewing.
$1500 is a huge bargain considering you can spend upwards of $20,000+ for a projector as well. |

I honestly never expected to hear that the price of a projector was unreasonable.
There is no other type of display on the market that is more cost effective per square foot of viewing surface (That's right, square foot, get used to that size measurement when talking projectors ![]() If you have the space to put one in, I can't imagine better bang for your buck. Of course, as Beta Man noted, a projector is a quite different machine from LCD or Plazma.... Last edited by jcdennis; 06-04-2008 at 05:08 PM. Reason: typo |

Prices of big:
71" LG plasma: $15,000 70" Sony LCD: $35,000 Mitsubishi HC6000 1080p projo: $4,000 + $2,000 Stewart Firehawk 100" screen = $6,000 So: $6,000 for a damn fine projector and one of the better screens on the market at 100 inches.... expensive? pssh |

As others have already pointed out, projectors are not expensive when you consider that most are used to throw an image that is larger than 80". I suspect if you poll most projector owners, the more common screen sizes would be in the 100-140" range (in width, not diagonal).
Try to find a rear projector, LCD, or Plasma anywhere near that size and you're talking probably 8k and up, if not in the tens of thousands. There are plenty of great projectors to be had in the under 8k (street price) category (JVC RS-1/RS-2, Sony VPL-VW60, Planar 8150/8130, Marantz VP15s2, Sim2 D80e, InFocus IN82/83, BenQ W5000, Sharp XV-Z20000, Samsung AP-A800B, etc) as well as in the under 3k category (Epson 1080UB, Sony VPL-VW40, Panasonic PT-AE2000U, Mitsu HC4900, Optoma HD80/72/70, etc.) If you're looking for a screen any less than 80", then a projector is not for you. Runco's/Vidikron's (all owned by Planar now) are well built projectors, but way overpriced for what you get. You do get great customer service for the price; but your money is really better spent elsewhere if you want to get your money's worth on a great projector. I'd take a Sim2 (as well as various other brands) over a Runco at the equivalent price point. Runco does integrate anamorphic lenses into their projectors better than anybody, and were the original champion of scope CIH setups; but you can definitely do this just as well and for cheaper with most projectors with a little reading/know how.
