Definitely worth the blind-buy! Here's my mini review:

I did not like this movie at all. The suits are alright, but the added backstory stuff was not very necessary, as all they had to do was just stick with the basic GATCHAMAN story the anime established (and ditch the "stones" bit).

Other than the action scene in the city (with the giant roving wheel), there was WAY too much talking and not enough Gatchamaning.

If you have the choice, seek out the CG animated CAPTAIN HARLOCK instead.

So I guess you are a Gatchaman fan then? Did the movie change everything around as they did in the Dragonball Evolution film?

Captain Harlock was a complete mess of a story - nice animation but awful confusing story.

Once I watched the trailer, that was all I needed to see. It looks way off compared to the original series. The suits are wrong. The actors playing the parts just are so far off base that it is sad. These actors look so generic. And, it looks cheap. I know some things have to change from an animated character to live action but I don't think that they made the right choices. Maybe someday if it hits Netflix I will catch it. But, for now, gonna avoid it like the plague.

Also, I don't like how they just gave away one of the shows secrets in the trailer.
[Show spoiler]The secret is that Berg Katse is either female or shemale. They played the character as a man until the end when he/she was unmasked to reveal the truth. Yet, now they just play the character as a woman.

I grew up watching BATTLE OF THE PLANETS and while it would have been nice to have that edit on the big blu-ray box set the new English dubbed voices aren't too bad. Besides, it looks fantastic with a true HD release based on the original film elements.

GATCHAMAN kind of ditched the basic elements of the series (where was the part where any of them transmuted, or used the Tornado? Where was Center Neptune [forget about 7-Zark-7; I know that was the US incarnation]?) and tried adding their own things, which were not only not necessary but just added to the exposition. I think there was maybe 2 action scenes in the whole movie (granted, the climax was pretty prolonged, but still... where were the animal shaped robots?). Hell, they could have just adapted the centipede episode with the little girl whose dad died from the first attack and Gatchaman gives her the chance for vengeance... or the killer plants 2 parter. They had so much material to pull from and they chuck it all out?

As far as CAPTAIN HARLOCK being confusing? Um.. did you watch the same movie, because everything was pretty much explained as the film went along. Hell, the opening 10 minutes of HARLOCK was better than the entire GATCHAMAN movie just in production design. I can't say there was anything as awesome in GATCHAMAN as when the Arcadia started ramming into ships with that giant skull.

But to each their own. In the end, it all comes down to whether you will buy the blu-ray or not. I will not be getting GATCHAMAN.

Watched the HK blu-ray last night (which looks and sounds fantastic) and really enjoyed this film. While it may not be completely faithful to the original series it is a very well made piece of "tokusatsu" entertainment. The opening action sequence is super-awesome There is also more to the Berge Katse character than what is shown in the trailer

+1.

A very low attention span would be the only reason to find Harlock even remotely confusing.

I had this disc last year. Decided to rewatch the opening city scene tonight in a bit of spare time. Enojyed it again, but when I removed the disc I noticed some odd discoloration on the disc playing surface.
A kind of soft milky circle around about halfway in, and the disc inside it had a noticeable purpleness to it. I'm familiar with DVDs being sometimes discoloured with blotch type patterns, but I've never seen a BD with a discoloured surface like this before.
I'm not sure if BD disc rot takes the same form as how it does on DVDs, my Kung-Fu Chefs BD bronzed and became unplayable. But this is totally different. Are there any known issues with this BD of Gatchaman succumbing to a form of disc rot and not working?
