I always use subs, but "no subtitles, no sale" seems a bit harsh for a classic like this, doesn't it? I must've seen this countless times on TV without subs. Don't let it be a deal killer unless you're totally deaf.

I never thought this would make it out given the currently hideous attitude MGM has toward its classics. I'm so happy!

I use them and need them. Like Olive and the TCM Lady From Shanghai disc, there's absolutely no reason a company shouldn't include subs on every release for the millions of people who require them. A few hundred dollars to have a track made, if it doesn't exist already (and most do) is peanuts compared to the sales they lose by hard of hearing people who can't buy it. It's sad a few of these companies don't think hard of hearing people should be able to watch movies like the rest of the population.

I guess a petition needs to be created so these companies finally "get it."

I agree 100%. They should always be included. As I said, I use them and my mom needs them badly. I was just saying that I'd get something this good anyway.

I'd sign it. I don't need subs myself (touch wood!), but I've always felt that subs, at least in the language of the film and the primary language of the region it's being sold into, should be a required feature under the BD specs, not just an option. It's basic consideration.

Thanks, guys. I will look into making one.

EDIT: Okay, I put together a petition, but I don't have the contacts at KINO, Olive, TCM to add to the recipient list. Should I just start compiling signatures and worry about delivering the results later?

You never shut up about subtitles.. how many times to members have to tell you that studios *cant just add them* as others have said there are costs involved with doing that, and as another member said there are contractual agreements. You did the same exact posts in the Lady from Shanghai thread ranting and raving to the point where some people got sick of it and now youre doing it here
<--------------this is what youre starting to sound like in these threads.. youre not helping the discussion ..you are just driving members up the wall with the same topic on every thread you invade.

i do "need" them as well. but i decided to get over it and find a solution that works for me. i will get a HTPC or a bluray player that allows to add subs via SRT or SSA files...

i do understand that some movies do not make enough money, thats why companys do not add subs sometimes. its probably not only just a few 100$ these things would cost to add. its probably more in the 1000$ range.

millions of people might require the subs , but sometimes probably a few hundred of people in total are gonna buy some of these movies...so labels like KINO have to decide if they are gonna spend a 1000 bucks on subs or loose maybe ~20 customers that might have gotten the release with subs.

No need to be a rude jerk, dude. Put him on your ignore list if it bugs you so much. Most BDs have subs and - especially with an aging population of folks who listened to loud music most of their lives - they become more needed every day. I don't know how old you are - but if need be, respect yer elders.

Frankly, I get tired of reading the same posts from the same person, I can ignore him which I shall. I know Im not the only one it bugs, I read threads for information about releases and such - it was how I learned of Lady of Shanghai version 2 but the debate went off to subtitles to no end .. Now I see that this movie is getting a much deserved blu ray release , read about it and here is the same member *****ing AGAIN over the lack of subtitles - I am sorry for being harsh but Im tired of reading about it. I shall not comment about this again, I have spoken my piece on this.

Well i too am bummed that they never include subtitles, that is why all my kino releases are either foreign or silents.

But in my case it is because english is not my native language, i can still understand it but for old films it is sometimes a little harder because of the audio quality.

Edit: So my guess is that they not only loose sales from people with hearing loss but also from potential foreign customers (which is not their market but that still can give them benefits, like in the case of Criterion for example)

I have no Kino releases at present, so ... they never include subs?

Sorry, not to derail the thread or go on about subs - I'd just like to know for future reference.

Yes, studios CAN just add them. 1) the cost isn't much compared to the rest of the disc, and 2) there are no more contractual agreements over subs than there are over extras, commentaries, the film itself, etc. Even Mill Creek includes subs a lot of the time, and their discs for $5.99. So if they can do it, then certainly any company charging standard price can do it.

Maybe if people get tired enough, they will help change something that should be changed already.

Again, I'm sorry if you think hard of hearing people shouldn't be allowed to watch movies. Why shouldn't I panic? If studios continue to discriminate against people like me, how am I supposed to watch these movies?

Just because a problem doesn't directly involve YOU doesn't mean it's not a problem for other people, and along as studios keep doing it, I will be in EVERY thread talking about it.

OH MY GOSH! You're TIRED of reading about something for the past couple of weeks? Well, I'm TIRED of buying blu-rays and DVDs then getting them home and not being able to watch them because the studio didn't THINK to include subs.

I think my complaint is a little more valid, if you ask me.

Why don't you just ignore me and continue not caring about anyone but yourself?

I pre-ordered this the other day for $16.99 from Amazon. Great price for a classic film with a slipcover!
