United Kingdom LOTR EE DVD Box Set Issue

I purchased this in 2009, mainly for FOTR. This was a couple of years before I purchased my first BD player and titles.

I finally got round to watching FOTR last night, and the annoying thing of it, is the writer's credits kept appearing on the upper part of the display every 2-3 minutes. This has never been a problem with TT or ROTK.

Very odd problem here, and essentially makes film unwatchable.

Has anyone noticed this before?

It almost sounds like you have a screener copy. They usual say 'Property of' or 'Screener Copy' at regular intervals. It might be worth just buying the BD if you don't have it!

Thanks for the information.

This is the strangest problem I've had with DVD. As you indicated, it's probably a screener that was overlooked by QA during production.

Reckon I'll eventually get the BD, as I like FOTR significantly more that the rest of the lot.

It's a shame, as unless you have the extended Blu-rays FotR has the worst PQ of the three. It's not shockingly bad but compared to the others it's very disappointing.

It's not that bad now with the release in March of the standard EE FOTR and the steelbook in May:

The 2 Disc set is under a fiver.

Interesting.

Wonder what the difference of extras are in BD EE (2 BD/3 DVD), whilst DVD EE has 2 DVD for film and 2 DVD for extras?

What would I be missing without the third DVD?

The third DVD is the Costa Botes documentary. They were only available with the limited edition DVD sets. The 5 disc BD release have the 2 DVDs from the Extended Edition DVD sets and the DVD from the limited edition set. The 2 Disc set under a fiver just has the film with commentaries. The box set and Steelbook have 5 discs (2 BD 3 DVD).

I broke my first rule of BD purchase of steelbooks only here, as Amazon despatched the 2-disk edition yesterday along with a few other items that were in my wish list.

I finally read the review:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-L.../19929/#Review

... and what finally swayed me to the 2-disk was this:
"... Costa Botes' Fellowship of the Ring Documentary (Disc 5, SD, 85 minutes): Last but certainly not least, a separate DVD is devoted to the behind-the-scenes documentary filmmaker Costa Botes shot during the filming of The Fellowship of the Ring. Less invasive than the Appendices, Botes' documentary sits back and soaks in the experience, capturing passing interactions between the actors, watching with great anticipation as Jackson descends to speak with the troops, and creating a wholly different yet wholly complementary companion to the rest of the Appendices. Unfortunately, it's presented in non-anamorphic widescreen, adding pillar-boxed insult to standard-def injury. ..."

Just couldn't justify the 5-disk steelbook for a, SD, 4:3 aspect ratio documentary. Wot a waste. If it was in anamorphic wide-screen, I probably would have purchased the steelbook.

BTW, thanks for pointing this out.

It was pretty disappointing to see they were non-anamorphic. I haven't watched all of them yet but they're pretty interesting, more fly-on-a-wall than the other behind-the-scenes videos. Things get pretty intense!

It's a shame they're not on YouTube and I still don't understand why they didn't have the 3 DVDs with both individual releases (Steelbook and Amaray) of the extended cuts.
