Neither. They are both low budget cult films that don't look so good in the first place.
But when you look at titles like the digital superscrubbing of "Predator" or the original release of "Le Samourai", those are much more disappointing since you know how good they are supposed to look. |

I saw JESUS CHRIST VAMPIRE HUNTER at a film festival running a 16mm print and it looked fantastic, rich colors and lovely contrast, and the full original frame projected on the screen. The Blu-ray not only crops the proper 1.33:1 original framing terribly (it was shot with a Bolex and "proudly edited on film" according to the credits) but desaturates the colors and contrast, and generally messes up the picture. This film really deserves a Criterion treatment, or at least a decent Shout Factory or Severin treatment.

Has anyone seen Machine Girl in a cinema? I'd like to know actually how bad the BD is compared to how it really should look. US blu-ray I have is a tad better than the UK blu-ray I also had. But both versions must be one of the worst BD's I've owned.

The Hills Have Eyes (1977 version) is another really bad BD. It's basically a mediocre DVD put onto a Blu-ray disc... no definition to the picture whatsoever. Compare it to MGM's release of "The Last House on the Left" (from the same director, also shot on 16mm with a super low budget) and the difference in picture quality is shocking.
I have "Machine Girl" on DVD and I bet it uses the same source as the BD. It looks bad there too - it's got that blurry video look to it. I wonder if it has something to do with the way it was shot. Tokyo Shock seems to have some very maligned releases on Blu-ray - I know their release of "Ichi the Killer" is frequently cited as being awful on this site, too. |
