Default In room response question

Don't even know if their is a constant or general effect but I just spent a few hours fine tuning my setup. Right now I'm running 1 Velodyne Impact-10 (32Hz) and a Martin Logan Dynamo 500 (29Hz). I'm very satisfied with the bass response I get with those 2 and their blend is as good as I can get it without a dedicated EQ.

Anyways, cut to the chase, I put on my favorite 5.1 recording, Steven Wilson's "The Raven" on BD and when Luminol started, volume about -20dB, I was really impressed by the depth of the bass. Maybe 7-8 mins in, it really goes on overdrive. Up to today I really wouldn't turn the volume down but just now I jumped on the remote, first time I felt such good bass at my place.

So??? How much deeper can subs get with a good in room response, seems I gain some and it's not booming or anything like that, chest thumping bass.

Thanks

In room versus outside can vary quite a bit for two reasons.

1)First, the bad news. Because of the bass interaction with all the reflective boundaries (walls, floor, ceiling) you will usually experience moderate-severe response dips/peaks.

2)Second, the good news. Placing the sub near these boundaries increases system efficiency a good bit. This is often referred to as boundary gain. Also, a similar but separate effect known as room gain(or pressure vessel effect) can allow a subwoofer to extend much deeper in room versus outside.

There is a ton of easy to digest reading on the subject here.

Thanks. I was aware of some but that helps and the links are great. Thanks Tom

Edit: Very interesting reading indeed. He answers many "subwoofer" myths in there, and with readings to confirm his sayings it does indeed bring experimenting yet another option for me, trying both in the same corner. I do have my Velodyne "corner-loaded" in the rear right corner in its closest possible location to my main listening position as I found by toying that it was indeed giving me the best response (based on my guts).

Anyways, REW is my next step but was curious before hands.
