Default Friend is looking for TV, but has unreasonable price point (please help)

Hello,

A friend is looking for an HDTV. He wants an LCD because there are a lot of windows in his living room and he doesn't want to have to worry about glare. Also, he sits like 15 feet away from the TV (don't ask why) so he wants something big like 46" or more. This pretty much leaves him at either a 46" 1080p Sony or Samsung LCD set. The entry level in both these brands for that size is about $1499.99 or more. He says will not buy a tv until the price point drops to $1199.99. I just don't see this happening anytime soon. Prices have dropped a great deal as is. If these are his criteria, I just can't see him getting one for a few years.

Another thought, since he sits so far away, is maybe his best value would be a 50" 720p Panasonic Plasma. Are there any 720p panny's that are really good at eliminating glare? I honestly think this might be his best value but he does have a lot of windows so I don't want to suggest something that would have glare all over it.

thanks a bunch.

not sure about glare, but at 15' away, I'd probably buy a 720p and save a ton of cash...... he "might" be able to still see a difference from 1080p, but it will be nominal at that distance.

again... not sure about glare.... with the money he saves, he can buy some window treatments!

Ok. seeing that we are dealing with a budget here, I've looked and found a set that fits your friends description. Its and Olevia 47 inch (CNET gives it a 9.0 on its review - I haven't personally used this set) . Here's the link http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...571&CatId=3650 Its at Tigerdirect and it cost....:drumroll: $999.99! I have used Tigerdirect with much success - and I know some people there personally. This set is also a 1080p set!

Well, I have a "friend" as well who one time took a girl home from the bar and the next morning it felt like jalepeno juice came. I, er, he, also had to buy special shampoo because there was a strange itch.

Tell your "friend" to look into Sharp, LG, Olevia, Vizio. There are options out there. Either that or tell him to have fun for 18 months while that Samsung and Sonys come down.

At 15' away, I would not be concerned about 1080p. I've got a 720p Pany plasma, sit 10-12' away and can't imagine the picture being any better. No SDE or anything, but that is with my eyes. Everyone's eyes are different, and you cannot go strictly by what others tell you. There's also the future aspect of it all. What if you decide to move or move the set into another room where you will now be 8' away? You (he) may want 1080p for that.

As for plasma vs LCD? I would take plasma any day over an LCD in MOST circumstances. I have a 42" Pany plasma in my family room that has LOTS of windows that are not curtained in any way. If I had to do it again, I would seriously consider LCD for that room, simply due to all of the ambient light that makes viewing difficult during the day.

Not sure where you are located, but if you are in FL or GA, check out Brandsmart USA. They usually have killer sales, and I know for a fact that the sale people are willing to negotiate.

They have a website, but don't post prices, because they are simply a B&M operation.

Agree.... I have an LCD.... next "set" will be Plasma.... I have 37" LCD and it's only 720p but wouldn't even really want 1080p for my 10' viewing distance..... my next purchase is gonna be a projector though For 15' away, maybe a 720p projector would even fit his budget, but he wouldn't want to use it for everyday/T.V. use, and he would HAVE to address the lighting situation.

Lots of light though...... I say get the biggest 720p he can find in LCD or Plasma.... that's his best bet.

My Grandmother has a panasonic plasma, I think it's a 50" and the glare on the thing is horrible, HD looks pretty decent, but I like my LCD much better, much nicer picture. I'd check around tigerdirect the olevia is a nice tv that link was posted earlier. for 999.99 thats a good deal.
