Default The Sand Pebbles - great BD

The Sand Pebbles Blu-ray

The Sand Pebbles Blu-ray Review

I find it amazing that such a superb film is receiving such little support from BD supporters. I believe it is like two thousand something on Amazon best sellers. Here is an epic film that is outstanding in every department; great direction by Robert Wise(Sound of Music), Steve McQueen's finest performance, and one of Jerry Goldsmith's best scores. Studios are not going to release top notch catalogue titles if they don't sell. After "Patton" this is the best film released by Fox recently(WW11).

The Sand Pebbles has never looked or sounded better as it does on this Blu-Ray. For a 1966 film it looks wonderful. Film=5, PQ=4/4.5, SQ=4/4.5

This is one great movie. I'm on the road right now, but I have the BD waiting for me at home and I can't wait to watch it. I was surprised to see this movie released so soon in the game. Hopefully it will catch on and start selling better. As you said, this is Steve McQueen at his best.

The fact that this thread is getting no response is indicative of the lack of interest in quality classic films.

The Sand Pebbles is one of Steve McQueen's best films. Watch how his hands are always busy. He was great with props.

I agree with the original poster - too many people feel that all the films released in the past two years or so with all the glitzy Hollywood special effects qualify as classics - when the true movie makers that made Hollywood what it is are overlooked. I would much rather spend my money on these films that truly deserve to be presented in this wonderful format. Hopefully the releases of Patton and The Sand Pebbles will be the beginning of more great films released.

I've got this on order. Haven't seen it in years so should be great. Hopefully "Blue Max" will come out some day on blu.

i watched it the other night

it had something you rarely find in the bulk of blu ray releases of modern movies

im not talking film grain

im not talking DNR, 3d pop, depth of view yada yada

this movie was unusual in that its obvious someone had hired a script writer and that same script writer had spent enough time to weave an intricate story to entertain adults

this movie came from an era where studio heads weren't pressured by bean counters to tailor scripts for the 14 -19 demographic

if you enjoyed cloverfield, love Big Brother and think that transformers is a hollywood masterpiece then avoid this movie

If you want your film grain intact and not filtered into oblivion (together with all fine detail) get Pebbles and ignore Patton.

You will need to flat out allow time for folks to get it and actually watch it!

I rented it yesterday and watched the first half. I enjoyed it very much. I don't feel though Patton (which I have watched) versus Sand Pebbles is from the same school entirely for comparison purposes though obviously from the same studio.

I'll refrain from final verdict until I fully viewed the remainder in the next few days. I'm sure more will be getting the full set that was offered but for me personally, I'm glad Blockbuster had them for rental at a local store so I could take a look see.

I think people see that movie at 34.99$ at Best Buy and just chukle their head. If it was 19.99$ and less it would sell more..

Watched it last night and thought it was an amazing transfer. If you haven't gotten a copy, do yourself a favor and order it. Deep Discount DVD gives an extra 20% off this week.

I hope to see more Steve McQueen films soon. How about The Great Escape or Papillon??

Yep... There's only a few that will pay $34.99 for a Blu-ray where they could get the DVD for under $10. It's RIDICULOUS that Fox thinks that people will pay that much for their movies (probably because they think we're "used" to paying higher prices).

That's not a bad deal at all. I might consider ordering the 3 pack at some point at that price.

I probably would have picked it up last night at Circuit City,if it wasn't for the $34.99 price tag.

I've actually never seen this movie, but I am planning on renting it if I can find it so I can watch and see if I feel it's worth buying. I haven't seen a war movie made before 1980 that I haven't liked though, with the exception of 'Where Eagles Dare'.
