United Kingdom Unforgiven (Ken Watanabe) -- 28 July 2014

Warner Bros. will release Unforgiven AKA 許されざる者 (Yurusarezaru mono) (2013) on Blu-ray in the UK on 28 July, apparently as a SteelBook edition only. The film is a Japanese-language remake of the 1992 Clint Eastwood film of the Same name, with Ken Watanabe taking the role played by Eastwood in the original film.

Warner also handled the film's release in Japan earlier this year. The Japanese release (which is not English-friendly) contains Panasonic's proprietary Master Grade Video Coding (MGVC) technology, which is only accessible on certain Japanese Blu-ray players from Panasonic. The technology utilizes the MVC codec to include additional information on the disc for full 36-bit color depth.

Surprisingly, the BBFC have classified some extras for this UK release, including the lengthy making-of documentary. Unfortunately, it does not appear that the audio commentary for the film is among them, so it would seem that is not being ported over.

Deleted Scenes (with optional audio commentary):

To be fair, there wasn't an audio commentary on the Japanese blu-ray in the first place.

edit: apparently there is one...

That's not what WHV Japan says...

Considering how mediocre Warner's Rurouni Kenshin disc ended up, I'm not holding my breath.

I'm thinking this turns out better. Warner co-produced both films, but all signs point to this one being held by them in most territories, just as they do with the original Eastwood film. Because of that, they can simply take the Japanese materials they already have in Japan and just add English subtitles,

On the other hand, WB had no involvement with the Rurouni Kenshin Blu-ray, which was handled by Amuse Soft in Japan.

They felt the need to filter it, for some strange reason.

Amazon and Zavvi are now showing that this release will have two discs, but there is no information on what the second disc is, or if it is a Blu-ray or not.

My copy arrived to me in California today. I did not expect it so soon. I'm glad it arrived. I'll watch it this weekend. I love the artwork, so happy I was able to peel the ratings stickers off.

The film was good and had a lovely pace my only criticism is that the subtitles were in white and were difficult to read when the scene was covered in snow which was a lot of the time.
Did anyone else find that?

Steelbook only? That is random. I'd like to see this but I guess I'll wait until it hits the bargain bin, which I guess will be soon by releasing it in such an alienating fashion.

They're also too small for my tastes.
