Default 'Yoga Hosers' - Kevin Smith Working on 'Tusk' Spin-Off

Quote:
Kevin Smith Says Weinsteins Passed on ‘Clerks 3,’ Plans ‘Tusk’ Spinoff Called ‘Yoga Hosers’

In a new interview, Kevin Smith offered updates on his upcoming projects. He’s currently in post-production on Tusk, a creepy tale based on a real-life news story, and that film has reportedly inspired a spin-off. Smith said two characters who appear in the film briefly will star in a new movie called Yoga Hosers, which is based on another story he discussed on his Smodcast.

Also, Smith said he took the script for Clerks 3 to Bob and Harvey Weinstein, but they passed on making the movie. The Weinsteins distributed the first two Clerks films but felt the proposed $6 million budget was too much. They’d distribute, though, if Smith raises the funds himself.

Smith spoke to Screen Daily (via The Playlist) about the projects, and here are the quotes.

On Clerks 3:

Quote:
[The Weinsteins] passed. I went in with a $6m budget and they were, like, ‘Oh no Kevin, this is too high’. Bob offered us distribution but they weren’t going to finance it.
That’s probably a significant blow to the film, which Smith had long envisioned as a studio project. He’s incredibly resourceful, however, so it’s still likely we’ll see the film at some point. And possibly under the Weinstein banner.

On Yoga Hosers:

Quote:
Like Tusk, ['Yoga-Hosers'] sprang out of a podcast. There are two characters in a convenience store in ‘Tusk’ that you see for five minutes, very much Ronsencrantz and Guildenstern. I’ve built a whole movie around them and I have brought one of the other characters from Tusk back.
So what exactly is Yoga Hosers? The story was talked about in-depth on episode 288 of his Smodcast and the potential for a movie was covered in the Edmonton Journal in May. Smith also mentioned potentially turning this into a movie at the time, so this is more an update as opposed to new news. Basically, the story follows a yoga enthusiast accused of stealing a $1.2 million Persian artifact. The film would probably not be exactly about that, though. More likely it would be a story of people who love yoga stealing things. But that’s speculative. You can read more about the story at the Journal link.

Smith also has the Krampus film, Anti-Claus, in the works and who knows how many other projects. When we’ll see either Clerks 3 or Yoga Hosers is, then, a mystery, but one thing is for certain. Smith hasn’t retired as once thought. He said the following about his career: ”I am definitely not going to retire. I am only going to make films that only I could ever make or would ever make.”

Can we watch the film first Kev before you go bonkers and make a spin off. I'm sure the reason why the Weinsteins won't produce Clerks III is not because it's budgeted too high, but because Smith is just on some elaborate midlife crisis, making films that aren't going anywhere fast and writing fan fics for Batfleck.

Kevin Smith Reveals Plans For ‘True North Trilogy’ Beginning With ‘Tusk’

By now, you’ve probably seen the trailer for Kevin Smith‘s Tusk. And if not, click here and check it out. Revealed in Smith’s annual Hall H panel at Comic-Con, the footage shows a very different Smith from the “snoochie boochies” days of the past. This is a Smith with something messed up to say. And, according to the writer/director/podcaster, he’s going to be saying much more of it.

On his panel, Smith also revealed Tusk is the first film in what he hopes will be a trilogy of films he called “The True North Trilogy.” Likely a reference to a similar Canadian setting, Tusk would be followed by Yoga Hosers (which Smith wants to make next, and be PG-13) and a new movie called Moose Jaws which he described as “Jaws, with a moose.” All three films would return the same actors as Tusk. Read more about the Kevin Smith True North Trilogy below

During the panel, Smith told his fans that while writing the still in-development Hit Somebody miniseries, he got very deep into Canadian lore and history. He couldn’t use a lot of it in his hockey story but he let it influence Tusk. The Canadian mythology and setting helped flush out Smith’s original story idea, based on a podcast about a man who wanted someone to live with him and dress as a walrus. Tusk hits theaters in September.

Smith’s next film, Yoga Hosers, is a bit more mysterious at the moment. He talked like it was going to shoot next and maybe be be ready for release next year. And though the film was spawned by an odd story of theft among yoga enthusiasts, that seems to not be the focus at all. Smith said he was hoping to make Yoga Hosers his second PG-13 movie (the first being Jersey Girl) because it stars two 15-year-old girls as the main characters. In the film, they’ll battle people with superpowers. Or maybe have superpowers. It wasn’t exactly clear. But Smith said he would be “run out of the country” once we heard what the powers in the movie were.

Then there’s Moose Jaws. The only thing Smith said beyond the premise is that it featured a scene of the killer moose chowing down on a little girl. So it sounds like some kind of exploitation horror.

Finally, Smith mentioned he still hopes to make Clerks 3 in 2015. So with the True North Trilogy, his Krampus movie Anti-Klaus and Clerks 3, Smith is either going to be very busy for the next few years, or is just overly ambitious. Probably a bit of both.

Johnny Depp and Lily-Rose Depp Cast in Kevin Smith's 'Yoga Hosers'

Kevin Smith has cast off ideas of retirement and is instead driving forward with the development and creation of small-budget films based on original ideas that spring out of podcasts and his own fevered brain. The next one is the horror story Tusk, which premieres next month at the Toronto Film Festival. At Comic Con, Smith revealed that Tusk is the first film in what he hopes will be a set of Canada-based stories called “The True North Trilogy.”

The second film in the set will be Yoga Hosers, a story about two high school girls who battle evil. The film is described as an “action/adventure movie” that Smith says will effectively be his own comic book movie. Johnny Depp is now set for the film, and the leads will be played by his daughter Lily-Rose Depp, and Smith’s daughter Harley Quinn Smith.

THR reports the cast, and confirms that all the major players from Tusk will be on board, too: Michael Parks, Justin Long, Haley Joel Osment, Genesis Rodriguez, Ralph Garman, Jennifer Schwalbach and Harley Morenstein. Also set for Yoga Hosers are Tony Hale, Natasha Lyonne, Austin Butler, Adam Brody, Tyler Posey and Jason Mewes. (Depp is also rumored to have a small role in Tusk, though that is not confirmed at this point.)

The two lead characters appear as convenience store clerks in Tusk. Last month Smith said of Yoga Hosers,

Here’s how THR describes Smith’s script:

Quote:
[It] centers on 15-year-old yoga nuts Colleen Collette (Lily-Rose Depp) and Colleen McKenzie (Harley Quinn Smith) who have an after-school job at a Manitoba convenience store called Eh-2-Zed. When an ancient evil rises from beneath Canada’s crust and threatens their big invitation to a Grade 12 party, the Colleens join forces with a legendary man-hunter from Montreal named Guy Lapointe (Depp) to fight for their lives with, according to the producers, “all seven Charkas, one Warrior Pose at a time.”
Smith told the site, “People always ask me ‘Are you ever going to make a comic book movie?’ This is it – but instead of yet another dude saving the day, our antiheroes are the most feared and formidable creatures man has ever encountered: two fifteen year old girls.”

What the fact that that's her name or that she's in it? She's only had silent cameos (except for maybe Jersey Girl, don't remember her in that) before that, and in the Tusk trailer, she seemed alright. Better than alright. Pretty good.

Speak for yourself. In my book, Smith has only made one terrible movie: Cop Out. He knows what he's doing.

So the girls are clerks? Lol. Love it. Bring it on Kev. Here's hoping your daughter can hang better than your wife on film.

Agreed. And even then, Cop Out is watchable. It's just the problems behind the scenes that really hurt that film in the long run. Otherwise, every one of Smith's films is not only watchable, but great-to-excellent. The man makes films that just hit me the right way. This one sounds fantastic.

I wasn't a huge fan of Red State, mainly because crazy, religious, nut-jobs make me angry (it did make shoot-out soooooo satisfying though). I haven't seen Cop Out all the way through so I can't comment on it, but I have loved all of his other work.

I look forward to Tusk, this, and whatever else he has planned.

So, as it stands, it seems this is his plan...
Yoga Hosers
Clerks III
Anti Claus
Moose Jaws

Also, I really liked Red State, because I went in expecting not to think much of it. I only didn't like the shootout, although the things happening around it worked. Also, boo to not going with the scripted ending.

Stan Lee Reunites With ‘Mallrats’ Director Kevin Smith in ‘Yoga Hosers’

Kevin Smith has always been a comic book fan. His second and third movies were steeped in comics. To this day, he’ll occasionally write a comic and even maintains a podcast about Batman. And for a comic book fan/filmmaker, there’s really nothing better than getting Stan Lee to appear in your film. That happened for Smith in film number two, Mallrats, when Lee showed up – as himself – to spout a few gross words of wisdom to our hero, Brodie.

Now, almost 10 years later, Smith got Lee to return for his latest film, Yoga Hosers. Check out the image and more below.

Smith tweeted the image of Lee in the film.

Quote:
20 years ago, I got a chance to direct @TheRealStanLee in MALLRATS. Last night, I got to do it again for @YogaHosers!

So what the heck is Yoga Hosers? It’s Smith’s latest film which stars his daughter, Harley Quinn Smith, and Johnny Depp’s daughter, Lily-Rose Depp, as convenience store clerks. But that’s where the Clerks comparisons end because here an evil rises and the girls have to fight it with “all seven Chakras, one Warrior Pose at a time.” Depp himself will reprise his Tusk role of Guy Lapointe and Smith describes the film as a bit of a superhero movie, just starring 15-year-old girls.

And if Yoga Hosers is a superhero movie, Lee’s role makes perfect sense. He’s appeared in almost every single Marvel movie to date as the creator of almost every character we see in their movies: Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Avengers, etc.

Lee will be joined in Yoga Hosers but a good portion of the Tusk cast: Michael Parks, Justin Long, Haley Joel Osment, Genesis Rodriguez, Ralph Garman, Jennifer Schwalbach and Harley Morenstein. New additions include Tony Hale, Natasha Lyonne, Austin Butler, Adam Brody, Tyler Posey and Jason Mewes.

Are you excited to see the Stan Lee Yoga Hosers scene?

Don't mind that Kevin cast his daughter. Who wouldn't want to have their kid in a (hopefully) kick ass film? And it'll be nice to have Johnny Depp and his daughter acting in the same movie too.

Honestly, the story sounds pretty damn cool. Way more up my alley than Red State. Really curious to see the chakra warrior poses. Will it be like Sailor Moon without the transformation?
