Default Movies worth a Second Chance

Ever give a movie a second chance? Put another way, did you ever watch a movie - and think it sucked - but watch it again, later, and think it was better - if not the best? If so, why did you consider watching it again?

I'm planning on giving Blade Runner a second chance. I watched it a few years ago. It was a VHS copy and the quality was pretty bad. However, I picked the blu-ray up today at Best Buy for $15. I'm hoping it's worth it.

Some of the movies I've given a second chance to include Star Wars, Ghostbusters, and Alien. I was young when I first saw them - probably way too young to appreciate them.

Casino Royale.

Saw it in the theatres, hated it.

Saw it again on Blu-ray, now one of my favorites to re-watch.

Sunshine.

Saw it as a Blu-ray blind buy, was left feeling "meh" at the end.

Saw it again, liked it enough to watch it every once in a while.

Blade Runner.

Another Blu blind meh...

...but after repeated viewings grasped its brilliance and now love to watch it.

Hot Fuzz - Thought it was a huge disappointment when I saw it in theaters and watched it again on DVD and love it now.

POTC: AWE - Saw it for the first time on blu and put it away for a couple months. I got sick and decided to give it another chance and watched the whole trilogy in a row and while it's still not better than the first POTC, but at least I like it now.

Cloverfield was better the second time. I thought it was really aweful in theatres and watched it yesterday and liked it much more.

Im hoping the same happens with Indy 4. Im pretty sure I will like it better the second time.

I like this thread!!

I find the older I get, I have to be in a mood for certain movies.

For me the biggest disappointing first watch was Harry Potter and the Sorecer's Stone. I actually fell asleep through it. Well on second try it immediatly became one of my favorite movies of all time and prompted me to go and read every book!

Other movies I didn't like, but gave a second chance to include Cars and Narnia: Lion Witch and the Wardrobe. Funny thing is, that if it wasn't for Blu I might not have given them a second chance.

I couldn't agree more. I saw Iron Man last night and was disappointed. Hopefully when I see it on BD it will be a different story. Though a lot of it could be that when I saw it that it wasn't in Digital Projection.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. The first time I watched it, I wasn't impressed, the second time I watched it I thought it was very clever and well written....laughed my ass off. I only watched it again cuz it was next in line. I watch all my movies in order alphabetically, I know, I'm a freak.

Dude, that's sick. So did you watch Die Hard with a Vengeance before calibrating your TV?

Moulin Rouge - just thought it was weird and eccentric the first time, but now I can watch it over and over and never get tired of it.

Donnie Darko - Was very confused the first time, but turns out it can be rewatched over and over as well.

I haven't seen Die Hard With a Vengence yet. Do those calibration things work? My TV looks pretty good already.

I'll tell you one movie I won't ever give a second chance: Transporter 2. That movie is a disgrace as a sequel... they should have never made it, and I wish I never would've wasted the time or money on it.

Kind of the same way here. I liked the movie a whole lot, but the theater we saw it in wasn't digital and there were TONS of film noise and cigarette burns. It was distracting to say the least.

I blind bought Blade Runner on Blu-ray a while ago, and didn't like/understand it, so I think I may take another look at it. I remember reading that the final cut that's on the first disc isn't the best version, as it's missing narration done by Ford. Can anyone chime in on this?

The first three 'Harry Potter' films -> the fourth and fifth gave them merit.
X-Men 3 -> watching all three in one sitting actually made it impressive.
Elektra -> Don't understand why, but it was better the second time.
Daredevil -> Same situation as Elektra.
The Fountain -> Still don't understand it though.
Fargo -> Hated it, then laughed my ass off at it.
Happy Feet -> Despised it in theatres, fell madly in love with the Blu-ray
Phone Booth -> Change of heart second time around.
The Devil's Advocate -> Bored out the first time, fell into it the second time.
The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou -> Guess I didn't get it the first time.
Man In The Iron Mask -> Leo DiCaprio ruined it the first time, the supporting cast has saved it since.
The Village -> Ok, I loved this one from the get-go, but I know half a dozen people who gave it a second chance and were all surprised by their enjoyment of it the second time around.

I fell asleep while watching dreamgirls. Later when seeing it again liked it a lot. It even made me search for some more of beyoncee music.

Hellboy. Didn't care for it at all when I saw it on DVD. Recently I saw the kick-ass trailer for Hellboy II and watched Hellboy again on Blu-ray and now I love the movie.

The most recent ones:

- Casino Royal: didn't like it the first time around, rewatched with my wife and liked it, love the BD

- Spidey 3: was disappointed at first, rewatched with one of our boys and liked it a lot better, love the BD

A lot of movies didn't get a second chance though, because I just know I won't like them any better (too many to list )

I gave all of these a second chance and loved them the second time around:
2001: A Space Odyssey
Blade Runner
No Country for Old Men
Titles that I plan to give a second chance once my unwatched count approaches single digits:
3:10 to Yuma
Syriana
I didn't think either of these were bad (which is of course why I'm giving them a second chance). The ending in 3:10 seemed a bit out of left field to me, but the rest of the movie was great. In Syriana, I was rather distracted by the storytelling style, a bit of reality TV meets stream of consciousness.
