So I just bought Patton on BD and I gotta say this is prolly the best blu ray i've ever seen...and i have about 100 bd's. the video quality for a 70s movie makes our newer movies look 2nd best. i urge everyone to go out and buy it. its absolutely mesmerizing to watch. and the dts hd ma track is great for a movie thats over 30 yrs old. wow...just awesome!

A lot old movies were shot using 70mm Panavision. So if well preserved, it will easily beat any recent movies which mostly shot on 35mm, Panavision or Super35.

agreed watching the 2 tape vhs/ dvd is like night and day compared to the blu-ray ... this is an amazing job done by fox and if every movie was done like it, blu-ray would have probly beaten every format out.... amazing movie! thank gosh for the level of care given to such a classic

Not trying to be a jerk, but when we create a thread, it takes seconds to use the spell check. It would make everyone posting in these threads look a little smarter. The word is "phenomenal." Just a suggestion since it seems to be happening with some frequency.

Oh and yes, Patton looks amazing on Blu-ray. Fox did a terrific job.

The Patton HD looks like a soft video game, for Christ's sake!
A plastic concoction devoid of any resemblance to the original film!
No wonder that appeals to people who think that everything should look hyperclean and with all grain and texture removed. Hello, haven't you noticed that all fine detail is gone?
That it does not look like a film from the 70s anymore?
Patton is a text book example of how classic films should not be mastered for HD because they are no longer films this way but something entirely different. A filtered to death video.

I watched it Saturday night and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was the best presentation of Patton I have ever seen.

I watched it on my 60" SXRD rear projection at a distance of about 4.5 PH's (Picture-Height).

However -- the experts are up in arms about this release because of the heavy use of DNR (digital noise reduction) which they claim has smoothed over the picture and removed a lot of film grain and high frequency detail. These are folks who are experts in the area of film (Robert Harris and others) and this is when viewed on a front projection system at ~110" viewed at 2 PH's or less.

Most average Joes like us will not notice this problem, so I say don't let it stop you from buying it if you like this film. This is the best it has ever looked on home video format, and it will likely be many, many years before Fox will ever revisit this transfer.

The links have got messed up in your copying and pasting somewhere - could you edit them? I'd quite like to see how it looks.

Of course static screen shots can't fully show the effects of temporal filtering, you can only truly see the mess they make of some movies with that when you see moving images.

I was looking at the screenshots, and I thought that looked wonderful, if they can remove the grain while keeping the detail and sharp picture then I'm all for it, that said I think that even if they do digital noise reduction, grain should still be there, some how it does look like something is missing even though the pictures look great. I'll be sure to pick up a copy of this during the week.

It doesn't require a 110" display to see the problems here, but a reasonably close viewing distance may be needed.

glad i ordered it for my dad then. was going to get him the 3 pack since he likes the longest day and pebbles, but his bday and father's day are 2 days apart so i can't do the "hey your present is not here yet, but i got you something."

At first I thought it said Platoon, and I was like holy crap when did that come out in blu-ray haha. Then I saw "70s movie" and noticed it said Patton haha. But I shall check it out.

Long live DNR.. grain is garbage.. grain will never be welcomed if at all possible in my home. I have an old sony vcr if I ever wanted grain I could use. Patton will move to my top 3 to purchase now due to dnr..
