Default well that was sad

I wanted see how my PS3 would play a SD and if it would look any better through a blu-ray player like people said they would. I didn't think it look better, but the worst part was it was a formatted movie. It looked awful on my 50" wide plasma.

Doesn't the PS3 upconvert? Standard DVDs look outstanding when upconverted on my stand-alone. I went with a stand-alone player cause the ps3's power supply sounded like an air conditioner running in the background. Too noisy for my tastes.

Oh no. Not another one of THESE threads (not you, OP - but the 2P),

My PS3 upconverts fine - stuff like Inside Man, Indy Jones, Star Wars, LOTR:EE upconverts beautifully.

Depends on the DVD, I think. Most everything I've watched upconverts pretty tastily, but there are exceptions. The worst examples in my collection are non-anamorphic widescreen presentations on single-layer DVDs.

My samsung 1400 does NOT upconvert well. I still use my denon 2900 dvd player for standard dvd's, it plays them much better than my blu-ray player.

The PS3 is one of the better upconverters and the best for the price out there.

I just got done watching the classic film DAMES on my Panasonic 50" Plasma and it was thru the PS3 looked great for a Black and white film... the regular film issues within the transfer itself remained but it looked great.

Right...the PS3 is quiet as a mouse compared to most video game systems. The 360 always sounds like it's about to go supernova. Plus I can barely hear my PS3 with nothing else running in the room.

Maybe you've got superhuman hearing powers. I'd rank that up there with superhuman smelling as superpowers on my DO NOT WANT list.

Not sure about his specific case, but my PS3 was incredibly quiet for a long time, and then out of nowhere started to make a lot of noise (the fan was working overtime). Now it's quiet again.

Have you updated the PS3s firmware? If so, did you set the system's upscale option to "on" (Double Scale, Normal, or Full)?

Same with mine. Except it hasn't returned to the quiet stage yet. I understand that I can buy a silent 2nd fan to help cool it down and thus the onboard fan won't get so noisy?

As noted already, it seems to depend on the DVD. Some DVDs look great upconverted, some don't.

BTW, I set mine to normal.

http://manuals.playstation.net/docum...ings.html#2449

DVD Upscaler
Adjust settings for upscaled output when playing a DVD. Upscaling is a feature that can be used to enable content recorded at SD resolution (NTSC: 480p / 480i, PAL: 576p / 576i) to be displayed in HD resolution (1080p / 1080i / 720p). Because the video content of commercial DVDs is recorded in SD resolution, higher resolution video can be achieved by enabling upscaled output.

Off Set to disable upscaled output.

Double Scale* Set to upscale and display with double horizontal and vertical dimensions without changing the proportions.

Normal Set to upscale and display at a size that matches the screen size.
Full Screen Set to upscale and display at full screen by changing proportions and stretching the image

* This option can be used only when the video output setting of the PS3™ system is set to 1080p or 1080i.

Hints
To use this feature, a TV that is compatible with HD input and output must be connected using an HDMI or component AV cable. Also, the video output setting of the PS3™ system must be set to 1080p, 1080i, or 720p.
When playing copyright-protected DVD content such as commercially available DVD-Video, an HDMI cable is required to upscale the video content.
If image quality is reduced or the image does not look right when upscaled, set this option to [Off].

I challenge you to watch it with the upscaler off, then watch the same scene again with upconverting on set at 'normal'.

You're welcome.

I did this with the Matrix Lobby shootout scene.

At first - with upconverting on - I was NOT impressed.
Then I watched it again with upconverting off... looked like total shite.

The upconvertor is doing a GREAT job. Trust me, see if you don't change your mind.

I have a 52" by the way.

Yeah, the problem is with the dvd not your player/ps3.
