That's a lot of contrast ratio, and a reputable brand.... I'd say it's worth the price of admission

I have a "cousin" as well, he was wondering what to do if he has an itch that won't go away. Except the itch is, well you know.

I have yet to even see or hear of anybody who owns this projector.

The SXRD projector looks like it would be amazing.

Tell him to check out this projector as well: http://reviews.cnet.com/home-theater...tag=prod.txt.1

It scored even higher on CNET and probably doesn't cost as much (no price listed).

Then it would definitely be worth considering, I would say.

first... love the signature...

second.... I have great credit...... very great (yeah, I said "very great" ) and Best Buy only extended me $10k (which I didn't need, and canceled the card out of non-use) $15K is a lot for best-buy to dish out I think.... (I know they have a bank that backs their card, and it's not them per-se.)

Unless he's already got everything else he may EVER possibly want..... I'd recommend spending less on the projector (the 1080p Black Pearl for $3K) and get a $1,500 to $2,000 screen.... I bet he'd notice more bang for his buck that way...... or get other audio equipment etc... not sure what he has now.... but 1080p from one t.v. to another isn't equal, so I know the projector is probably "better" than the "black pearl" but will he be able to tell???? and if he can, is it $12,000 worth of a difference???? seems like over-kill to me.... I'd spend the extra money on theater seating, butt-kickers, lighting, a bar, new floors, etc..... there's gotta be somewhere he could spend that money that would get him more enjoyment..... I wouldn't suggest it, but you said he was going to make payments... so he obviously doesn't have the $15,000 just "layin' around"

I would recommend getting a JVC DLA-HD100 and a decent screen. (personally i got a screen from Screen Research). The JVC got a contrast ratio of 30000:1, but without using a dynamic iris like the Sony.
But check out http://www.projectorcentral.com/JVC-DLA-RS2.htm and don't worry about the name confusion, in the US it's called RS2 and everywhere else it's called HD100, it's still the same product.

Yeah,

I think the Black Pearl may actually be a better pj for a lot less money. (I believe the pearl lets you correct panel alignment of the sxrd panels which was one of the big updates for sxrd pj's and it's missing from the VW100 and VW200.)

I've been following the evolution of the Sxrd pj's because that's what I plan to replace my current projector with someday.

I think the VW200 was 3rd gen (first was Qualia 06 (don't know the spelling) which cost 30K then there was Ruby VW100 which cost $10k, followed by the WV200 (or maybe that was the same gen as the 100 ... not sure.) and then the Pearl was only $5k and it's coming down.

The VW40 is actually the one I would consider as it's the newest and cheapest of the sxrd pj's and can often be found just over 2K.

No way would I consider that DLP pj or any DLP pj as long as the continue to make sxrd.

The VPL VW200 ("Sapphire") is an excellent projector-- its strengths are its excellent lens, near perfect color gamut "out of the box", very high contrast ratio, and it is the only projector available that does 120 Hz motion interpolation ("motionflow"). However, its contrast ratio is achieved with a dynamic iris, unlike the very high native contrast ratio of the JVC's D-ILA's (RS-1, RS-2). The VW200's native contrast ratio with iris wide open is only about ~3000:1. It's light output is also not the greatest in best viewing/D65 calibrated mode-- the JVC's are brighter; this can obviously limit the size of the screen that can be used with this screen, although this will vary user to user. Its Xenon lamp is also expensive to replace (~$1000).

It is a much better projector than the Black Pearl (VW60), and it should be for its price point. It throws a sharper, more detailed picture; likely attributable to the better lens. I'm pretty sure most people comparing the two will be able to tell the difference, but the improvement is an incremental one, not a revolutionary one. The Black Pearl may have 90% of the image quality of the Sapphire, but as with anything, you pay a serious premium to get those last few percentages of improvement. The VW200 does have a new panel convergence feature, which allow separate convergence of the three primary color panels as well as separate zone convergence. The convergence adjustments allow sub-pixel adjustment, which is excellent, but the convergence is done electronically, which can be theoretically problematic for image quality. The Motionflow feature is reportedly excellent for sports, less so for other material-- but different individuals will have different tastes on its use.

Whether or not this projector is worth its MSRP is completely dependent on the viewer. The owners of this unit that I know are very, very happy with it. The other projector in this price range for comparisons sake is the Marantz VP11s2, which I own. Both of these are excellent, and, like pretty much every projector on the market, have their strengths and weaknesses. You have to see them, and decide what projector works best in your particular setup. Some people prefer DLP, others LCOS (SXRD, D-ILA), and still others CRT. They each have their distinctive "look", strengths, and weaknesses: DLP-- sharpness and "3D" effect, LCOS-- excellent blacks and shadow detail, CRT-- ultimate blacks. Again, everyone will have a different preference on this.

The new Samsung mentioned above is also an excellent projector-- this is the one that Joe Kane designed. It is a one chip DLP unit, and throws a great picture from what reviewers have described. It is just now getting out in the market.

If you're looking in the $7000-15000 price range, the PJ's I would look at are the JVC RS-2, Planar 8150, Samsung A800, Sim2 D80 and HT380, Marantz 15s1 and 11s2, Sharp XV-Z20000, and the Sony.

There is plenty of information on all of these projectors on the "$3000 and up MSRP projector" forum on AVSforum.

I have the VPL-VW100 projector and it is awesome! The contrast ratio, clarity, & sharpness are second to none. I found Sony authorized dealers online that had the projector for alot less money. When I ordered my VW100 it was only out for a few months and every dealer in my area wasen't dropping below the msrp of $9999.99. After shopping around, I got it delivered(50.00 shipping) with no sales tax for $7,000.00!! So tell him to look online for better deals and also tell him he definatlly WON'T be disappointed
